The immediate past Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Lawyer Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, has advocated a sustainable empowerment for Assembly members to accelerate development.
According to him, the need to involve Assembly members, especially elected Assembly members, for effective grassroot mobilisation ahead of the 2024 general election, cannot be overemphasised.
“We (NPP) need to immediately meet Assembly members across the country, particularly the presiding members (PMs), to get their inputs to be factored ahead of the 2024 polls.

“It’s in our best interest to meet them and bring all of them on board in the campaign. I know our flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in his stakeholders engagement, will soon engage Assembly members, especially PMs,” he noted.
Dr. Kokofu, who is also a former government appointee at the Kumasi Metropolis Assembly (KMA) and former Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama, made the call in an interview with “The New Trust” newspaper on Wednesday, 29th May 2024, on the sidelines of meeting of conference of Ashanti PMs in Kumasi.
Dr. Kokofu, who was a special guest of honour, commended the conference of PMs for coming together.
According to him, the role of Assembly members in ensuring local development must be emphasised, and it should be supported by the nation.

“It’s high time the nation recommitted itself to ensure a sustainable resource for Assembly members,” he stressed.
He lamented that to date, despite the contributions of Assembly members, they’re not paid and they don’t have mobility as well.
