AFRICAN ELECTORAL INSTITUTE (AEI) WISHES SOMALILAND PEACEFUL ELECTIONS

PRESS RELEASE
TO: ALL MEDIA HOUSES
DATE: 12TH NOVEMBER, 2024.

  1. The African Electoral Institute (AEI) extends its warmest wishes to the people of Somaliland as they prepare to head to the polls on November 13, 2024. We hope that this general election will be a shining example of peaceful democracy, inspiring emerging democracies worldwide, and solidifying Somaliland’s position as a beacon of democratic values.

  2.

    As Somaliland returns to elections in 2024, it’s crucial to build upon the inclusive political and security processes that have distinguished the region over the decades. This will ensure the continued growth and stability of Somaliland’s democratic institutions.

  1. To achieve this, we urge all political stakeholders to play their roles effectively, avoiding confusion and chaos during and after the elections. The AEI emphasizes the importance of transparency, accountability, and fairness in the electoral process, such as;

i. Free and Fair Elections: Ensure that the will of the people is respected and reflected in the election outcome.
ii. No Manipulation: Prevent any manipulation of election results, maintaining the integrity of the democratic process.

iii. Strengthen Democratic Institutions: Continue to build upon Somaliland’s democratic foundations, promoting inclusive participation and security.

  1. AEI commends Somaliland’s commitment to democracy, as demonstrated by its history of peaceful transitions and democratic governance.

  2. The AEI stands in solidarity with the people of Somaliland, supporting their right to self-determination and democratic expression.

  3. Somaliland, let us work together to make this election a success, upholding the values of democracy, peace, and stability in the region.

  4. Despite Somaliland’s exemplary democratic record, spanning over two decades, the international community has yet to recognize its statehood, with only a few countries extending formal recognition. This oversight is noteworthy, given Somaliland’s history of peaceful governance and democratic processes.
  5. The African Electoral Institute hopes that this election will mark a turning point, leading to Somaliland’s recognition as a sovereign nation. We believe that Somaliland’s commitment to democracy, its inclusive political processes, and its people’s unwavering dedication to peaceful governance warrant international acknowledgment and support.
