Ayisah Foster, the Managing Editor of “The Punch” Newspaper is urging President John Dramani Mahama to nominate competent individuals as Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
His appeal emphasizes the need for capable leaders, who can drive development and improve governance at the local level.
Ayisah Foster
President Mahama, has acknowledged the challenges of unemployment, particularly among graduates, and has emphasized the importance of creating jobs and providing skills training .
However, the appointment of competent MMDCEs is crucial in addressing these challenges and promoting local development.
Ayisah Foster’s appeal suggests that ,the president should prioritize merit and competence in his nominations, rather than relying on political affiliations or other factors.
This approach, according to The Punch editor, would help ensure that MMDCEs are equipped to tackle the complex challenges facing their districts and provide effective leadership.
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for a comprehensive validation of the data regarding the beneficiaries of Ghana’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme. He highlighted the importance of accurate statistics to ensure informed policy decisions and effective reforms in the education sector.
Hon.Haruna Iddrisu
Speaking during his first official visit to the Ministry on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, following his swearing-in by President John Dramani Mahama, Iddrisu emphasized, “One of the very first major issues the country must interrogate is the statistical validity of how many Ghanaians have benefited from Free Senior High School.”
The Minister revealed discrepancies between publicly reported figures and his own findings. While parliamentary records suggest that approximately 5.1 million students have benefited from the Free SHS programme, his research estimates the figure to be closer to 3.9 million.
“I am not saying mine is right, but 5.1 million was misleading because I have looked at the numbers from 2017 to 2023, and I am convinced that the number of students who have benefited from the Free SHS policy stands at not more than 3.9 million. But I need a validation of that data to begin with,” he clarified.
Iddrisu stressed that his objective is not to discredit existing records but to establish a credible and accurate baseline for future policymaking. He noted that precise data is essential for evaluating the programme’s impact and shaping the direction of education policy in the country.
As part of his plans to strengthen the education sector, the Minister announced the organization of a National Education Conference. This gathering will serve as a platform to assess the state of education in Ghana and identify actionable reforms. He affirmed that validating the Free SHS data will be a critical component of these discussions.
The Minister’s focus on data integrity reflects his commitment to evidence-based policy making and ensuring that Ghana’s education sector meets the aspirations of its citizens.Source:dailymailgh.com
Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has pledged to draw inspiration from the legacies of former leaders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in Parliament as he assumes his role as Majority Leader.
In a statement issued on January 23 following his confirmation, Ayariga assured that the leadership styles and achievements of his predecessors would guide him in his new role. He takes over from Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who has been appointed Finance Minister.
“I am guided by the illustrious precedents set by former distinguished leaders of our caucus. Twenty years ago, our current Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, led us. Then Hon. Cletus Avoka, Hon. Benjamin Kunbuor, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, and most recently, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson. Their leadership styles will remain guideposts,” Ayariga said.
He affirmed the NDC caucus’s commitment to pursuing President John Dramani Mahama’s agenda to “reset Ghana.”

“As Leader of the House and Leader of Government Business, I assure the people of Ghana that, consistent with the overwhelming mandate given to President John Dramani Mahama and the 187 members of this caucus, we will rigorously pursue the agenda to reset Ghana,” he stated.
Ayariga also emphasized a commitment to inclusivity, consensus-building, and national unity, vowing not to abuse the NDC’s numerical advantage in Parliament.
“As President John Dramani Mahama has said, these overwhelming numbers will not be abused. Even though we are an overwhelming majority, we will strive for inclusivity, consensus-building, and deeply uphold the principles of probity and accountability in the fulfillment of the dreams of our founding fathers. We will foster national unity, advance democracy, and ensure equitable development.”

Acknowledging potential challenges ahead, Ayariga expressed confidence in the collective ability to overcome them through collaboration and respect.
“The road ahead will not be without challenges, but I am confident that together, through constructive dialogue and mutual respect, we can overcome any obstacles and deliver on our collective vision,” he concluded.
As the world commemorates the International Day of Clean Energy on January 26th, 2025, Ghana finds itself at a pivotal moment. The day symbolizes hope and progress, a reminder of the transformative potential clean energy holds for addressing global challenges such as climate change and energy insecurity. Hon. Francis Owusu-Akyaw, Member of Parliament for Juaben, delivered an impassioned statement marking the occasion and highlighting the significance of clean energy for Ghana’s sustainable development.
Francis Owusu-Akyaw
Ghana’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels has long come at a cost—rising global temperatures, extreme weather, and adverse health impacts. However, the country is increasingly embracing renewable energy solutions. From solar panels on rooftops to wind farms powering rural areas, Ghana’s commitment to clean energy signals a brighter, more sustainable future.
“Clean energy is more than a technology; it is a commitment to our planet, our people, and our shared prosperity,” said Hon. Owusu-Akyaw.
Despite progress, obstacles remain. High initial costs for renewable energy infrastructure, especially in rural areas, technological upgrades for the national grid, and limited public awareness about the benefits of clean energy are just a few of the challenges facing Ghana. However, Hon. Owusu-Akyaw emphasized the opportunities clean energy presents which includes Job Creation,
Innovation and
Global Cooperation
Ghana’s recent discovery of lithium in commercial quantities is a significant milestone. Lithium, essential for renewable energy technologies like batteries, positions Ghana as a potential leader in the global clean energy sector. However, Hon. Owusu-Akyaw stressed the need for sustainable practices to ensure the resource benefits communities and ecosystems.
Hon. Owusu-Akyaw called for bold, inclusive action. “The Government of Ghana must prioritize renewable energy policies, businesses must lead with innovation, and communities, both rural and urban, must embrace the change.”
Imagine a Ghana where clean energy powers homes, factories, and vehicles—a nation where pollution is a thing of the past, and energy is accessible to all. This is not a distant dream but a tangible future within our reach.
The International Day of Clean Energy is a time to reflect on progress, acknowledge challenges, and recommit to a sustainable future. As Ghana takes its place in the global clean energy revolution, the message is clear: the journey toward sustainability is not just a national mission—it is a shared global endeavor.
Together, we can ensure that the vision of a clean, sustainable future becomes a reality for generations to come.
Below is the full statement written and delivered by the Juaben constituency legislator.
Today, we commemorate International Day of Clean Energy a powerful symbol of hope,
progress, and a sustainable future. This day marks a call to action and a celebration of the
transformative potential of clean energy to address some of the most pressing challenges
of our time.
Clean energy is more than a technology; it is a commitment to our planet, our people, and
our shared prosperity. In a world facing the dual crises of climate change and energy
insecurity, clean energy stands as a beacon of possibility. It offers a way to power our
homes, our industries, and our aspirations without compromising the health of our
environment or the well-being of future generations.
For decades, Ghana has relied heavily on fossil fuels, a dependence that has come at a great
cost—rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and a toll on human health.
Clean energy represents a pivot away from this trajectory. It is a pathway to reducing
greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and fostering resilience against the
challenges ahead.
Ghana has been making significant strides in adopting clean energy solutions to address its
energy needs, combat climate change, and achieve sustainable development goals. The
country’s efforts reflect its commitment to transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable and
sustainable energy sources.
The challenges facing the adoption of clean energy may include high initial costs for
renewable energy infrastructure particularly in rural areas, enforcement and incentivization
mechanisms, integrating variable renewable energy sources like solar and wind into the
national grid requires technological upgrades and the limited awareness about the benefits
of clean energy.
The Challenges notwithstanding, clean energy adoption in Ghana is more than a necessity;
it is an opportunity to transform the country’s energy landscape, reduce environmental
impact, and improve livelihoods. By addressing existing challenges and capitalizing on
opportunities, Ghana can continue to build a sustainable energy future that benefits its
people and inspires the region.
Today, we celebrate the remarkable strides made in clean energy development and
adoption. Wind farms now used in some parts of the country; solar panels gleam on
rooftops of some government and private institutions; and cities are transitioning to energy
saving electrical appliances, reducing pollution and enhancing quality of life of the
citizenry.
Yet, as much as we have achieved, there is still so much more to do. The clean energy
revolution is an opportunity to:
a. Create Jobs: The renewable energy sector is already employing millions
worldwide, with the promise of even more opportunities as we scale up our efforts
as a country;
b. Drive Innovation: From energy storage to smart grids, clean energy is at the
forefront of technological breakthroughs that will define the next century; and
c. Foster Global Cooperation: Clean energy unites us in a shared mission. It
transcends borders, encouraging nations to collaborate in pursuit of a greener, more
equitable future.
The Government of Ghana, with its recent discovery of lithium in commercial quantities
provides us with an undoubtedly great opportunity to move towards environmentally
friendly sources of energy for adoption and usage in homes, factories, vehicles, amongst others.
Lithium’s role in clean energy is profound and by prioritizing sustainability, innovation, and equitable practices, Ghana can harness the potential of lithium without compromising the well-being of communities and ecosystems.
However, these opportunities require action—bold, decisive, and inclusive action. The
Government of Ghana must prioritize renewable energy policies, businesses must lead with
innovation, and communities, both rural and urban, must embrace the change. Each of us
has a role to play. Whether through advocacy, education, or daily choices, we contribute
to a global movement that places sustainability at its core.
Imagine a world powered by clean energy, a world where cities, towns and villages are
vibrant and pollution-free, where energy is accessible to all, and where we live in harmony
with nature. This is not a distant dream; it is a future within our grasp, one we must
collectively strive to achieve.
To conclude, today, let us honour the progress we have made, acknowledge the work that
lies ahead, and reaffirm our commitment to a sustainable future powered by clean energy.
Together, we can ensure that this vision becomes a reality, not just for us but for the generations to come.

PRESS RELEASE
TO ALL MEDIA HOUSES
DATE:23RD JANUARY 2025
The African Electoral Institute (AEI) is urging competent, capable, and patriotic Ghanaians to step forward and be elected as members of the Council of State. This call to civic duty is rooted in the belief that Ghana has talented individuals who can help the government improve the country’s fortunes.
Unfortunately, many citizens with the capacity to serve the nation shy away from public office, leaving room for questionable individuals to fill the gap. The AEI emphasizes that when citizens of integrity, competence, and loyalty avoid active public service, the nation ultimately loses.
The Council of State: A Platform for Service
The Council of State, established by Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, is a body of prominent citizens who advise the President on national issues ¹. The Council consists of various members, including former government officials, regional representatives, and appointees of the President.
The Role of Regional Representatives
According to paragraph C of clause 2 of article 89, one representative from each region of Ghana is elected to the Council of State ¹. These representatives are chosen by an electoral college comprising two representatives from each district in the region, nominated by the District Assemblies.
Your Opportunity to Serve
If you’re a patriotic Ghanaian with a passion for public service, now is the time to step forward. The AEI urges you to consider being elected as a regional representative to the Council of State. Your expertise, experience, and integrity can make a meaningful difference in shaping Ghana’s future.
Don’t let questionable individuals fill the gap. Answer the call to civic duty and join the Council of State. Together, let’s build a better Ghana for ourselves and future generations.

Across-sections of members of the public have been reacting to the domestic abuse story of Ms Karen Baaba Sam after she shared her distressing experience allegedly at the hands of her ex-partner, Nana Kwadwo Adjei, a very well-known businessman in Ghana.
In a recent interview with Asaase News, Ms Karen Baaba Sam (“Baaba Sam” or “Karen”) narrated her harrowing experience with Nana Kwadwo Adjei while the two cohabited together with their daughter between 2016 and 2020. The level of abuse, according to Ms Sam, led her to move out of their home to a separate apartment.
Several persons have taken to their social media handles and pages to react to the story of Karen Baaba Sam and to share their personal experiences or stories about other people’s experiences regarding domestic violence and its related issues and how the police have treated the case of the victim when she reported her predicament.
Social Media reactions
Ayinipobila Azas, for example, wrote in a post on her Facebook Wall in reaction to Ms Baaba Sam’s narrative: “I admire this lady (Karen Baaba Sam) for her remarkable bravery in sharing a story that is so often shrouded in silence and shame.
“It takes incredible strength to speak openly about something so personal and painful, especially when society can sometimes fail to provide the support survivors need. Her story has inspired me to share my own. I hope my story can be a light for someone else, just as hers has been for me.
“In 2020, my life was shattered by domestic violence. The person I trusted turned into my worst nightmare. He physically assaulted me, leaving me battered, bruised, and fearing for my life. I’ll never forget the chilling words he said: “The only reason you’re alive is because I don’t have a gun,” Ms Ayinipobila Azas’s Facebook post read.
“At that moment, I felt utterly helpless. My world crumbled, and my sense of safety was stripped away. What followed was a long and painful road, not only of physical recovery but of emotional and psychological healing.
My source of comfort and strength was my faith and the everlasting mercies of God.
“Our society has a long way to go in addressing domestic violence, from supporting survivors to holding abusers accountable. We must do better. But I fear we may not become better in my lifetime. To anyone who is suffering, please know this: You are not alone.
“There are people who care, people who want to help, even when it feels like the world has turned its back on you. You are strong, even when you don’t feel it, and you deserve a life free from fear and pain.
To the rest of us, it’s time to act. Let’s support survivors, advocate for change in the legal system, and create a world where no one feels powerless in the face of abuse,” Ms Azas’s post further read.
Bridget Otoo, a very well-known media personality in Ghana, also shared her thoughts on X handle. She said: “The reason the woman (Karen Baaba Sam) stayed in that marriage is exactly why we are talking today! For the police to declare her wanted and make the victim out to be the perpetrator.
“She lived with someone who bragged about his influence over police! Several reports were also made to East Legon police, and no action was taken! A lot of you need to sit out on such sensitive issues,” Bridget Otoo’s post read.
“You refuse to think and are quick to blame a woman for staying in an abusive relationship without even understanding how complex it is to leave! Women are murdered for threatening to leave a relationship!!!” Ms Otoo further posted on her X handle.
Another person, Abeeku Acquah, in his reaction to the Story of Ms Karen Baaba Sam, observed: “What a shameful weak man. To be beating up your partner like that? There’s no need to hear the “other side” of the story. He is just horrible.”
Popular Ghanaian actress Ms Lydia Forson also took to her X handle to express her displeasure with the details in Ms Karen Baaba Sam’s story. After reading it, she simply posted, “This is a chilling read!”
Camry Tagoe, another social media user retorting to Ms Forson’s reaction, also wrote: “I just finished it and I feel so…. I don’t even know. Any man who hits a woman just because they think they can or feels angry deserves castration.”
Police Warrant
In a related development, a warrant of arrest dated Monday, 20 January 2025, has emerged on social media declaring Ms Karen Baaba Sam wanted by the Achimota District Court to assist the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in a case of unlawful child removal.
The Police warrant further states that Ms Baaba Sam is 29 years old, 5 feet and 6 inches tall, fair in complexion, slim in stature, has a tattoo on her right breast, and is a native of Dormaa Ahenkro. She is believed to be hiding in East Legon, Airport Residential Area, Cantonments, Osu, or Dzorwulu. The warrant was signed by the Superintendent of Police, Joseph Benefo Darkwah.
However, reacting to the arrest warrant and its content, a private practice lawyer, Seth Doe Esq., in a post on his X handle, pointed out that “when the police give such description for a “wanted person,” you know there is something behind the scenes.
Another social media user, @Aku_Addy, on X also posted: “We let foolishness slide too much in this country. Look at how much he beat that lady and how frequently. And everyone around her. Yet he boldly went to [the] police and told them to declare her wanted, citing the tattoo on her breast as an ID. And [the] police printed it and put it out. Smh.”
Background
Baaba Sam, a young and resilient Ghanaian woman, has broken her silence on the years of physical, verbal, and emotional abuse she endured at the hands of her ex-partner, Nana Adjei.
In a chilling account, Karen details the harrowing experiences that began in 2016 and culminated in a bitter custody battle over their daughter, Ohemaa. Karen met Nana Adjei in 2016. What initially seemed like a loving and protective relationship soon took a dark turn.
By 2018, when she became pregnant with their daughter, Nana Adjei appeared excited, especially since most of his children from previous relationships lived abroad with their mothers. However, cracks began to show when his second son, who had moved in with them, left after suffering physical abuse from his father.
Karen recalls the first incident of domestic violence occurring in December 2018, when Nana Adjei returned home drunk after a night out. When she asked him about where he had been, the responses she received were slaps and kicks to her body, including her pregnant belly.
“I was more scared for my unborn child than for myself,” she recounted. She managed to call a friend, Leeroy, who intervened. Nana Adjei later apologized, blaming his actions on the alcohol he had consumed.
Over the years, Karen says she suffered repeated physical assaults, often resulting in black eyes and a swollen face. Despite her brother filing a report at the East Legon Police Station, no action was taken.
According to Karen, Nana Adjei boasted about his influence in the police, making it impossible for her to seek justice. Karen’s breaking point came in April 2023, when she encountered Nana Adjei at a restaurant with another woman, whom she later discovered was his new girlfriend.
When she attempted to leave with him in his (Nana Adjei’s) car, the woman humiliated her in public, while Nana Adjei did nothing to stop it. Karen chose to walk away. However, when she got home, Nana Adjei attacked her again, beating her in the presence of their daughter.
“Nana Adjei also assaulted two family friends visiting from Germany who tried to intervene. During the chaos, Nana Adjei even kicked their daughter, causing her to fall and cry. Determined to escape the abuse, Karen ended the relationship in December 2023.
“Nana Adjei reacted with threats and demanded the return of all gifts he had given her, including their daughter’s school car. Fearing further abuse, Karen moved out in February 2024.
On her very first night in her new home, Karen was robbed at gunpoint, with all her valuables stolen. She found the timing suspicious, especially when Nana Adjei demanded the return of a specific necklace—the only valuable the robbers did not take.
The authorities believed the attack was carried out by someone close to her, prompting them to assign her police protection.
Mr. Patrick Kwame Frimpong, the Ashanti Regional Dean of Presiding Members (PMs), who doubles as the First National Vice Chairman of NALAG, has renewed his passionate appeal to Ghanaians, especially the youth, to desist from physical attacks on military and other security personnel, in order to promote peaceful coexistence.
According to him, reported cases of attacks on military and other security personnel, who have been trained with the nation’s resources, have become too many and there is the urgent need for all stakeholders to join the crusade to uproot it.
Mr Frimpong, who is also the elected Assembly member for the Krofrom East Electoral Area and KMA Presiding Member, made the appeal in an interview with “The New Trust” newspaper on Wednesday, 22nd January 2025.
Mr.Patrick Kwame Frimpong
His call follows the recent clashes by some illegal miners and some military personnel in Obuasi, resulting in the death of nine people, with others sustaining severe injuries, including a military personnel.
Whilst condemning the incident and expressing his condolences to the bereaved families, he noted that the incident shouldn’t have happened had it not been previous incidents occasioned by civilians.
It would be recalled that two persons were also killed at Ahafo Kenyasi by police personnel providing security for Ahafo Newmont mines for allegedly attempting to steal.
Mr. Frimpong, who had made a similar appeal after the attack on the late Major Mahama seven years ago and subsequent attacks on security men at Ejura, among other incidents, admonished the military and other security agencies to adopt new strategies to avoid future clashes which usually lead to loss of lives.
Mr.Patrick Kwame Frimpong
It would be recalled that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have vowed to continue their efforts to safeguard the nation’s resources and ensure the safety of both civilians and security personnel.
The GAF also issued a stern warning to illegal miners, urging them to stay away from mining concessions and to refrain from engaging in violent confrontations with troops.
“GAF wishes to urge all illegal miners to stay away from mining concessions and also desist from engaging troops in shootouts since the consequences of such actions could be fatal,” the statement read.Myjoyonline.com reports that, the Government of Ghana has consistently warned against illegal mining, also known as “galamsey,” which has been a growing issue in the country, causing environmental damage and posing security threats.
The military’s Operation HALT II is part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities to restore order in mining areas.

Kofi Job and his wife were accompanied by high-profile ministers of God. After interacting with the managements of the various hospitals, they visited selected wards to pray for patients before making physical cash donation for the payment of bills and the purchase of some hospital equipment on Wednesday, 22nd January 2025.
It would be recalled that Mr. Gyebi and his wife donated GH¢1 million to pay medical bills for patients at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) last year.
According to the couple, the donation is aimed at providing relief to patients and their families.
Mr. Gyebi and his wife pledged that the donation would not be a nine-day wonder, for they would continue to do it until their Maker calls them from this earth.

He said even though many people are wealthy, they are not willing to support the needy, but God has laid it upon him and his wife to help the poor, hence the setting up of Kofi Job Foundation to support the needy.
Dr.Mrs.Esther Okyere Gyebi speaking to the media
According to him, by the grace of God, he has made it in life and he has realised that, without Christ, everything is vanity.
He said it is appointed for every man to die once and after that there is judgment. He, therefore, used the opportunity to appeal to all Ghanaians, especially those who are well-to-do, to share their wealth with the needy in society since government alone cannot shoulder that responsibility.

They prayed for long life with strength for the couple in all their endeavours.
Mrs. Gladys Abban, the Nursing Manager for Kumasi South Hospital, heaped praises on the couple and urged others to emulate their good example. She prayed that the Almighty God continue to bless them and enlarge their territories in order to encourage them to do more for the needy.
Dr. Emmanuel Asante, the Clinical Care Co-ordinator of Tafo Hospital, on behalf of the management and beneficiary patients, as well as Mrs. Faustina Agyeiwaa of Manhyia District Hospital, commended the couple for paying the medical bills of the patients and donating cash for the purchase of needed hospital equipment.
President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that his government has successfully averted the looming threat of power outages, commonly referred to as “dumsor.”
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony for newly approved ministers, President Mahama emphasised that decisive action had been taken to stabilise the energy sector and ensure uninterrupted power supply despite challenges inherited from the previous administration.
“As you may all be aware, the previous government did not work to ensure a smooth running of the energy sector by neglecting to arrange enough fuel to power our thermal plant. This was because of the known scheduled maintenance work that was expected to be placed on the West Africa Gas Pipeline (WAPCo) which is responsible for bringing in significant gas that we have in our eastern enclave.
“Through determined efforts, I can report that we have now averted the looming threats of power outages and began delivering fuel to the thermal plant in the east in advance of the shutdown of the WAPCo gas pipeline,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the president swore in minister nominees who were recently approved by parliament. They are; Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Finance, Dr. Dominic Ayine, Attorney General and John Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition
The others include Haruna Iddrisu, Minister for Education, Eric Opoku, Minister for Food and Agriculture and Governs Kwame Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways
