Just in.Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament declares 4 seats vacant
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin has officially declared four parliamentary seats vacant with barely two months to the election in December.
This ruling means that Ghana’s hung parliament which gave the governing New Patriotic Party a slight upper hand as the Majority side with the support of an Independent Member of Parliament, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, will not tilt towards the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Alban Sumana Bagbin
The legislators affected by the ruling are the NDC’s Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah of Amenfi Central constituency, Andrew Amoakoh Asiamah of Fomena, Kojo Asante, NPP MP for Suhum in the Eastern Region, and NPP’s Cynthia Morrison of Agona West constituency.
The decision follows an official petition to the Speaker by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu.
It comes after extensive discussions and arguments presented by both the Majority and Minority sides of the House concerning the petition filed by former NDC Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu.
The petition specifically targeted three New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs and one MP from the NDC, invoking Article 97 (1)(g) of the Constitution.
This constitutional provision stipulates that an MP must vacate their seat if they leave the party under which they were elected or attempt to remain in Parliament as an independent candidate.
This situation has sparked significant debate within Parliament, highlighting the political tensions between the ruling party and the opposition.
During a heated parliamentary debate on Tuesday, Speaker Bagbin acknowledged the gravity of the matter and requested an additional two days to deliver a well-reasoned Source: myjoyonline.com

Election 2024: Let’s work hard to protect Free SHS – Irene Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Charges Women
By:A news desk Report
Mrs. Irene Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Executive Chairperson of Sompahemaa Foundation, a private philanthropic organization and Wife of Suame MP, has called on all industrious and forward-looking women to consider supporting Dr. Bawumia’s 2024 Campaign. She noted that the campaign is the greatest sacrifice ever made to secure a better future for the girl-child.
She made the call in the Ashanti Region, where she joined the Second Lady of the Republic, H.E. Hajia Samira Bawumia, on a tour of the region
Hajia Samira has been in the Ashanti Region to propagate the compelling message of her affable husband, the Vice President and the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party for the 2024 general elections.
Mrs. Irene Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu
Mrs. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu affirmed that education is undoubtedly the bedrock of all development. She explained that ‘For the country to reverse the dwindling fortunes of the vulnerable in society, most of whom are women and children, there is an urgent need for governments to develop policies and programmes that propel women towards sustainable job opportunities as contained in the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 8.
Mrs Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has a strong conviction that the current NPP-led administration has provided an unmatched infrastructural development in many sectors of the ghanaian economy which, if sustained, would form the foundation upon which sustainable growth could be leveraged by all.
She is a trained teacher, nurse, and philanthropist whose passion to restore hope to the vulnerable has been ignited by the sheer number of people seeking support from her husband, Hon.Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, on daily basis. She opined that the desire to assist as many people to scale-up on the financial ladder must speak to the consciences of Ghanaian women to vote for Dr. Bawumia and the NPP to safeguard the free education policy
She appealed to all women to contribute their “widow’s mite” in various forms, and hence leave a lasting legacy for future generations. Mrs. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu concluded that “Education indeed can provide the bigger basket from which every individual would tap for success” as aptly stated by Dr. Bawumia in his vision statement and Manifesto.
Official:EC disqualifies NDC’s Joana Cudjoe from Amenfi Central Parliamentary race
Source: Kenneth Awotwe Darko
The Electoral Commission (EC) has disqualified Joana Cudjoe from running as a NDC candidate for the parliamentary election in the Amenfi Central constituency.
This follows a petition to EC claiming that there is a pending order of interlocutory injunction restraining the Commission from recognising Mrs. Cudjoe as the Parliamentary Candidate of the party.
“It is ordered that until the final determination of the matter the affected parties are restrained as follows: a) The 1. Defendant/Respondent for holding herself out as the duly elected NDC Parliamentary candidate for the Amenfi Central Constituency.”
This was contained in a letter from the EC’s Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey.
“The Commission’s attention has been drawn to an Order for Interlocutory Injunction dated 31st May, 2024 in respect of a suit entitled Gyedu Frimpong & 4 Others Vrs Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the National Democratic Congress & the Electoral Commission (Suit No. E12/36/24) by the High Court, Sekondi,” he wrote.
The petitioners were doubting the authenticity of the candidate’s voter identification.
It came after a successful filing of nomination forms by the candidate, Joana Gyan Cudjoe who was re-elected by delegates following an annulment of primaries conducted earlier this year.
The Parliamentary Candidate had to run in the party’s parliamentary primaries for the second time after the party at the national level nullified her nomination.
A statement signed by General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey noted that the election had been the subject of litigation at the High Court in Sekondi, hence the annulment.
But the candidate in a fresh primary was re-elected by popular acclamation.
In the October 16 letter, the EC explained that the said court order “has neither been stayed nor vacated hence the Commission is bound by same.”
