The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has alleged that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is orchestrating a plan to secure a third term for President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking on Peace FM’s morning show Kokrokoo, Mr. Kodua claimed that the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is part of a broader strategy by the NDC to amend Ghana’s constitution in favor of President Mahama.According to him, individuals within the ruling party are pushing for a reinterpretation of Article 66(2) of the 1992 Constitution, suggesting that the presidential term limit applies only to two consecutive terms.

By this logic, Mr. Mahama, who served one full term, lost reelection, and then returned to win the 2024 election, would be eligible for another term.
“This is the motivation behind the Chief Justice’s suspension,” he alleged, suggesting that the move is aimed at clearing obstacles to constitutional amendments that could favor the President’s continued stay in office.Source : Peacefmonline.com
Former Secretary to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Charles Cromwell Nanabanyin Onuawonto Bissue, has issued a firm response to a writ filed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which seeks to prosecute him and Andy Thomas Owusu for alleged corruption and misuse of public office for profit.
In a statement released on Tuesday, April 29, Bissue confirmed that the OSP had initiated legal proceedings related to the controversial Galamsey Fraud documentary published by investigative outfit Tiger Eye P.I. in 2019.
Rejecting the accusations, Bissue said: “I categorically assert that I have always acted in full compliance with both the legal and ethical obligations of the office I held and the laws of the Republic of Ghana. Any suggestion of misconduct is baseless and will be vigorously challenged through due process.”
He further called for transparency in the trial, urging the OSP to present a complete, unedited, and unaltered version of the investigative video forming the basis of the prosecution. According to him, this is critical to ensure that the truth is fully revealed, without distortion.

Bissue also noted the timing of the case, highlighting that the prosecution is being pursued under a new administration, different from the one in which he served. Emphasizing the importance of fairness, he said: “It is my sincere hope that this process will allow all parties an equitable opportunity to present evidence and that the facts will be evaluated fairly, without bias.”
Reaffirming his intention to fully cooperate with the legal process, Bissue appealed for public restraint and trust in the judicial system.
“I urge the public to respect the legal process and refrain from premature judgments. The people of Ghana deserve transparency, accountability, and a resolution rooted in the rule of law,” he stated.
He concluded by expressing confidence in the judiciary, saying he believes the matter will be resolved impartially and conclusively.
Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, clashed with New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, at Berekum in the Bono Region during Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s national thank-you tour on Monday.
The former Vice President’s tour reached the Bono Region on Monday, where Abronye is Regional Chairman, and the meeting was nearly ruined following a verbal clash between Agyapong and Abronye.
Abronye Kennedy Agyapong
As regional chairman, Abronye was the first to speak, and in his welcome address, he fired salvos that Kennedy Agyapong later interpreted as being targeted at him.
The Bono Regional Chairman questioned the sincerity of persons preaching unity in the NPP, when, in his view, the same people had earlier sown seeds of discord within the party with their utterances, which, he said, the NDC used to campaign against the NPP during the elections, quoting the Prof Mike Ocquaye post election fact-finding committee.
Abronye also rejected a proposal by Kennedy Agyapong that the party should grant amnesty to all former members who had left the party as well as those on suspension.
Abronye was of the view that granting such amnesty to people who had been punished by the party for misconduct would be a clear endorsement and promotion of indiscipline.
This party needs discipline and I do not support such a proposal, he said.
Abronye said that those pushing for such amnesty and unity had, in the lead up to the election, attacked the party publicly and contributed to its defeat.
Kennedy Agyapong was obviously not happy, and he fired his own salvos at Abronye when he got to his turn to speak.
He angrily warned that he could not be intimidated, and responded to Abronye with a mixture of insinuations and direct attacks.
Some people talk as if they own the party, but they don’t. If we are seeking real men in the party, they don’t measure up. Their financial contribution is minimal. They go around begging yet they have mouths to talk. Even you poor people want to speak your mind, how much more rich men like us. Who born dog! an angry Kennedy Agyapong said.
Still responding, Kennedy Agyapong also attacked Abronye’s record as Regional Chairman of the party, pointing out that the NPP had only one parliamentary seat in the region.
Earlier, Abronye had defended his record as Regional Chairman, as well as the records of his constituency executives, insisting that although the region voted massively for the NPP in 2016 and 2020, the NPP government neglected the region, as several calls for key projects like roads to be prioritised fell on deaf ears from 2017 to 2024.
President John Dramani Mahama has assured that the Adwumawura Programme is fully funded, unlike previous initiatives under Akufo-Addo’s administration, which ultimately proved to be mere mirages.
Speaking at the official launch of the programme on Monday, April 28, President Mahama described it as an ambitious but necessary undertaking for the nation’s development.
He emphasised that Adwumawura Programme would not follow the path of previous initiatives that were announced with much fanfare but ultimately lacked sustainable funding.
The President assured the public that Adwumawura Programme is fully funded, with adequate allocations provided by the Ministry of Finance in the 2025 budget.
“This is an ambitious undertaking. But it’s necessary if we’re to secure a prosperous and resilient future for the youth of Ghana. Let me point out that this programme is not like others that were announced in the recent past, with a lot of fanfare, but proved to be mirages without adequate funding to sustain them.Ghanaian fashion

He further explained that the programme is designed to be inclusive, youth-led, and Ghanaian-owned.

A Kumasi High Court has dismissed a petition by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) challenging the results of three parliamentary seats in the Ashanti Region in the 2024 election, ruling in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The NDC filed petitions contesting the outcomes in the parliamentary elections in the Ahafo Ano South-West, Obuasi East, and Ahafo Ano North constituencies, claiming the party’s candidates had rightfully won the seats despite official recounts and the subsequent swearing-in of the NPP Members of Parliament.
Counsel for the NPP MPs, Clement Opoku Gyamfi argued that the NDC failed to comply with procedural requirements, specifically not applying for the determination of security for costs within 21 days after the election results were gazetted, as required by law.
“Two High Court judges, one from High Court 2 and another from High Court 6, have unanimously ruled that the NDC petition is invalid and dismissed it.” He said the NDC has no case and has ordered the three MPs to remain in Parliament to represent their constituencies.
Stand firm against any forces that aim to divide us-Napo tells NPP Supporters
Dr.Mathee Opoku Prempeh writes
In the early hours of Thursday, April 24, 2025, I had the privilege of meeting with the NPP Regional Chairman for Bono East and his constituency chairmen in Wenchi.
Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh aka Napo
The meeting was an opportunity to express my deepest sense of gratitude for their unflinching support and leadership, even in the face of our recent loss.
During our discussions, I reminded them that the strength of a united party is essential for victory in 2028.
I pointed out that the absence of the NPP has already been felt by the people of Ghana, and the only obstacle to our success would be internal division. A fragmented party, no matter how strong its Flagbearer, stands no chance of winning elections.
I emphasized the critical role these leaders play in fostering unity within our ranks. They must stand firm against any forces that aim to divide us. United, we stand tall; divided, we fall!
I reaffirmed my commitment to a united NPP and to the hard work ahead as we strive to reclaim power in 2028.

The Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has accused Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of refusing to take responsibility for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general election.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, 27th April 2025, Dr Boamah criticised the NPP flagbearer, alleging that he was attempting to shift blame onto others rather than accepting his role in the party’s electoral loss.
In his post, Dr Boamah asserted that Dr Bawumia played a pivotal role in the economic challenges that contributed to the NPP’s downfall.
Dr Edward Omane Boamah Dr.Mahamudu Bawumia
“Elections 2024: Bawumia is blaming everything & everybody EXCEPT HIMSELF. Bawumia was critical for NPP’s economic mess!” he wrote, underscoring his belief that Dr Bawumia’s leadership failures were central to the party’s defeat.
The Defence Minister’s comments add to the growing chorus of criticism from political opponents, who have argued that the NPP leadership failed to adequately address the country’s economic difficulties, leading to widespread voter dissatisfaction. Source: MyJoyOnline.com
Bank of Ghana Governor (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, says the cedi’s days of excessive volatility against the dollar are coming to an end.
Speaking to Joy Business’ on the sidelines of the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington D.C., Dr. Asiama assured that the central bank would continue implementing measures to preserve the current stability of the Ghana cedi.
“Going forward, we have enough reserves to maintain the current stability the cedi is enjoying against the US dollar,” Dr. Asiama stated.
Dr. Johnson Asiama(left) interacting with the Journalist
However, he was quick to add, “The Bank of Ghana is not going to operate a fixed exchange rate regime.
The cedi is an endogenous variable, and we must allow it to float. What the Bank of Ghana aims to do is ensure there is no excessive volatility.”
Reasons Behind the Cedi’s Stability
The Ghana cedi has recorded one of its longest periods of stability against the US dollar in recent times. Since December 2024, the local currency has remained largely stable, even appreciating against the dollar on some days.
Data from the Bank of Ghana and some commercial banks show that, as of April 2025, the cedi had appreciated by 2.76 per cent against the dollar.
Bloomberg’s currency platform reported that as of April 28, 2025, most commercial banks were selling the dollar at GH¢15.58, with some quoting GH¢15.40 today.
Market analysts have attributed the cedi’s resilience to several factors, including active liquidity support from the central bank and BoG’s Gold Purchase Programme, which has boosted market confidence and curbed speculative activities.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also highlighted Ghana’s stronger-than-expected international reserve buildup.
According to the Bank of Ghana’s Economic and Financial Data, international reserves reached $9.3 billion at the end of February 2025, significantly exceeding targets set under the IMF’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF)-supported programme.
Governor’s Perspective on the Cedi’s Performance
Dr. Asiama outlined key reasons behind the currency’s stability:
Improved external sector performance, supported by strong remittances and better earnings from gold and cocoa exports.
Effective coordination between fiscal and monetary policy ensures that both sides work harmoniously to strengthen economic fundamentals.
Weaker US dollar performance globally has created favourable conditions for the cedi.
He emphasised, “The fiscal side has been supportive of monetary measures, helping to maintain the current development.”
Impact of the IMF Programme
The BoG Governor also noted that the recent Staff Level Agreement with the IMF has played a crucial role in boosting investor confidence.
“The Staff Level Agreement with the IMF was like a stamp of approval for the government’s efforts to restore macroeconomic stability,” Dr. Asiama explained.
He added that discipline on both the fiscal and monetary fronts continues to help reset market expectations and restore confidence.
Impact on Inflation
Dr. Asiama expressed optimism that the cedi’s improved performance would contribute to a further slowdown in inflation in the coming months.
“This should be complemented by the monetary measures the Bank of Ghana is implementing to continue driving inflation lower,” he stated.Source: George Wiafe, Special Correspondent, Washington D.C., USA
The aims and objectives listed below as enshrined in the Constitution of NPP clearly put the New Patriotic Party(NPP) ahead of any political party operating in Ghana including the NDC:
To manage the economy of the country with efficiency and prudence, guided by the consideration of national interest.
To promote a vibrant, free-market economy and encourage vigorous participation by citizens in economic activities.
To create a climate in which private enterprise will thrive and citizens and foreigners alike may invest without fear and without unnecessary bureaucratic restrictions and impediments, in order to create wealth and prosperity for the citizens and people of the country.
This objective has been amended as, “to recognize and guarantee the ownership of property by individuals, either alone or in association with others.
To solve the grave problem of massive unemployment and to provide for all who are capable, the opportunity and means of earning a living, either by way of self-employment or as employees in various undertakings.
To ensure that the wealth of the country is not monopolized by a section or particular area of the country but is fairly shared and enjoyed by all, in particular, to bridge the present wide gap between the urban and rural communities and also improve conditions in depressed urban areas of the country.
To protect the environment from degradation and repair the damage done to the environment by wasteful and improper exploitation of our land, forest, marine, and fresh water resources.
To ensure that there are equal opportunities for all citizens without discrimination on any grounds whether of gender, age, position, politics, religion or status so that they can contribute more effectively to the development of the nation.
These aforementioned objectives of our Party seriously positioned NPP as the “Better Managers of the Economy”, and equally influenced majority of the Upper Class, Middle Class, the Business Community, Academia, the Elite Community etc. to become our backbone.
However, it hasn’t been easy fully achieving the above aims and objectives of NPP under Kufuor and Akufo-Addo’s governments due to several human errors in judgement and unforseen factors.
Nevertheless, the governments of Kufuor and Akufo-Addo have tremendously done well to contribute to national development and nation-building of Ghana.
The continuation of NPP’s Policy Interventions under Mahama’s government(as captured in Sections 202, 205, 206, 207 of 2025 Budget Speech) such as Free SHS Policy, School Feeding Programme, Capitation Grant, payments of Teacher Trainee and Nursing Trainee Allowances, clearly show that NPP is a strategic asset for the development of Ghana.
In fact, the 120 days of Mahama’s government has proven that, NPP government is still better managers of the Ghanaian economy especially in the midst of adversities.
According to the 2025 Budget Speech presented by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson(Minister of Finance) to the Parliament of Ghana, it clearly shows that the sustainability and functionality of the 2025 Budget of Mahama’s government is anchored on some key policies of previous governments of NPP such as:
Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment Act, 2017(Act 947).
The National Health Insurance Levy(NHIL), Road Fund, and GNPC, under Mahama’s government will fully receive allocation under the Act 947 passed by Akufo-Addo’s government(Section 135, Page 37 of 2025 Budget Speech).
The Mineral Income Investment Fund(MIIF) Act, 2018(Act 978) passed by Akufo-Addo’s government will be amended by Mahama’s government to ensure that 80% Mineral Royalties originally maintained by MIIF is transferred to the Consolidated Fund for Infrastructure development(Section 135, Page 37 of 2025 Budget Speech).
Mahama’s government will increase the Growth & Sustainability Levy from 1% on the gross production of mining companies to 3% to enable the nation to have its fair share of the windfall from increase in gold prices, and have also proposed to extend the sunset clause to 2028(Section 157, Pages 44-45 of 2025 Budget Speech).
It is very essential to state that, the Growth & Sustainability Levy Act, 2023(Act 1095) was passed by Akufo-Addo’s government.
Mahama’s government has proposed the extension of the sunset clause for the Special Import Levy to 2028 as part of the revenue measures of Mahama’s government(Section 158, Page 45 of 2025 Budget Speech).
The Special Import Levy Act, 2013(Act 861) was first passed in 2013, amended in the same year of 2013(Act 869), and in 2014(Act 884).
In 2017, under Akufo-Addo’s government, the Special Import Levy was further amended to Act 2017(Act 944) aimed at extending the period of application while making specific exemptions.
Mahama’s government in 2025 will continue to implement reforms and increase budgetary allocations to enhance the implementation of the FOUR TARGETED SOCIAL PROTECTION PROGRAMMES (Section 209,Page 61 of 2025 Budget Speech) namely:
(a). NHIS
(b). LEAP(Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty) Programme
(c). School Feeding Programme
(d). Capitation Grant
It is worth stating that, NPP under Kufuor introduced and implemented the FOUR TARGETED SOCIAL PROTECTION PROGRAMMES mentioned in Section 209, Page 61 of the 2025 Budget Speech.
NPP is a government for the vulnerable and we strongly believe in Social Protection Programmes for the poor and destitute.
However, let me also commend President John Mahama for ensuring the continuation and sustainability of the aforementioned NPP Policies and Programmes including the Agenda 111 Hospitals. Continuity of national projects by successive governments is one of the best approaches of accelerating national development in Ghana.
In 2028, the New Patriotic Party(NPP) with the appropriate Presidential Candidate and Parliamentary Candidates coupled with Unity of Purpose would stand the greater chance of winning power from the NDC.
The legacies of Kufuor and Akufo-Addo are our surest trump cards and unique selling proposition(USP) for 2028 general election.

A coalition of political parties has declared a nationwide protest for Monday, May 5, 2025, vowing to resist what they describe as a “reckless assault” on Ghana’s democracy.
This follows what they say is the unlawful suspension of the Chief Justice and the termination of several public service appointments.
In a sharply worded statement issued after an emergency meeting on Thursday, April 24, the parties warned that the soul of Ghana’s constitutional order is under siege.

“This is not about politics. This is about principle. This is a fight for Ghana,” the statement read.
The group behind the protest includes the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM).
They called on all citizens, civil society organisations, and religious groups to join what they call a non-partisan, national call to defend judicial independence.
“We will not allow political power to erode the foundations of our republic,” they declared, warning that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which currently leads government, is deliberately attempting to compromise all independent institutions.
Citing the suspension of the Chief Justice as the most egregious example, the parties claim the move is not an isolated incident but part of a broader scheme to “capture every arm of government, even the judiciary.”
They compared the current crisis to a previous failed attempt by the NDC in 2010 to remove the late Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, Ghana’s first female to hold the position.
“History is being repeated. We must not remain silent.”
According to the coalition, credible political intelligence points to a wider plot. They allege that after reconstituting the judiciary with “loyalist appointments,” there are plans to pursue constitutional interpretation at the Supreme Court, aimed at legitimising a third-term bid for former President John Mahama in the 2028 elections.
“This isn’t conjecture. This is a carefully calculated agenda,” the statement said.
The protest also seeks to highlight what they term the unlawful dismissal of public servants, describing it as a vindictive move to replace career professionals with political loyalists.
“Is this the future Mahama promised?” the statement questioned. “A regime of fear, where livelihoods are sacrificed on the altar of political vengeance?”
In a final rallying cry, the group warned of creeping tyranny and called on the so-called “silent majority” to rise.
“To remain indifferent is to endorse the rise of an authoritarian state. Be a citizen, not a spectator. Stand for democracy. Oppose dictatorship.”Source: Abubakar Ibrahim
