Information and disturbing videos available to this paper indicate that tension is currently brewing at the Sekyere Kumawu branch of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the release of the remaining metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) by President John Dramani Mahama

The Kumawu Zongo branch of the NDC on Saturday, 5th April 2025, stormed the party’s office with a stern warning to the leadership of the party and President Mahama that if their preferred candidate was not nominated, there would not be any peace in the area.

They have, therefore, rejected the potential nomination of their former parliamentary candidate, Mr. Akwasi Amankwah (Tom C), as the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area.

Mr. Sualey Olanto Yakubu, secretary to the group of election directorate, expressed discontent at a press conference, stating that the nomination would be an affront to their integrity.

Akwasi Amankwah, popularly known as Tom C, was the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Kumawu in the recent by-election.

However, the controversy stems from a derogatory comment allegedly made by Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, former finance minister, implying that he wouldn’t allow a native from the Zongo community to lead the party in the constituency in spite of the significant role played by the Zongo community in the 2024 general election that led to electoral success of the NDC.

Mr. Yakubu emphasised that due to their commitment and support to the NDC, they increased their support base in the 2024 elections.

According to him, the loyalty of the Zongo community to the NDC should warrant respect, not insults.

In the course of the press conference, some irate NDC youth, who couldn’t control their anger as result of the alleged derogatory remarks by Dr Duffuor, invaded the constituency office and destroyed some items to register their displeasure.

Immediately after the press conference, they demonstrated a signal to their warning by destroying the NDC office and important documents.

The concerned NDC members in the area think that the situation highlights the need for the party to address the concerns of its members and ensure that their contributions are valued and respected.

The group has, however, proposed an alternative candidate, Shamsu Huda, the deputy constituency secretary, who has tirelessly worked for the party in the constituency. They believe Huda’s dedication and qualifications make him an ideal candidate for the DCE position.

The secretary to the group also urged President Mahama and the Local Government Minister, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, to consider their plea and appoint Shamsu Huda as the DCE.

The NDC’s Kumawu Zongo branch is resolute in its stance, seeking recognition and respect for its contributions to the party.
