Construction of Multi-Storey Car Park in Adum kicks off-Ksi Mayor reveals

Hon.Samuel Pyne, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Kumasi,has announced that works on the construction of the Multi-Storey car park at Adum in Kumasi has finally begun and is moving on steadily.

 

“The Contractor, Golden Lion Limited officially moved to site and began work on 20th February, 2023 and has been on the site since then. It is envisaged that the first phase will be completed by the end of the year”, he explained.

The above was contained in the Mayor’s sessional address delivered  during the 1st ordinary meeting of the 4th session of the 8th Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly(KMA) held on Tuesday,18th April,2023 at prempeh Assembly hall.

The Mayor said even though, their plates may have been full, they managed to pay special attention to education in the metropolis.

According to him,apart from the infrastructure provision, they also catered for the soft aspects by sponsoring BECE mock examinations for over Seven Thousand (7,000) candidates.

“We provided educational materials for Kindergarten and Basic one pupils as part of My first day at School. To enhance the safety and security of students in our High Schools, the KMA distributed three Thousand (3,000) energy saving bulbs to Fifteen (15) Senior High and Technical Schools in the metropolis.

I am excited to say that our efforts are yielding fruits. The percentage pass for 2021 stood at 92.4% as against 85.6 in 2020. We will not give up we will continue doing our best until we get the desired results”, he added..

Hon.Samuel Pyne, disclosed that the Uaddara Basic School made KMA proud by emerging national winners of the Ghana Science Technology Explorer Prize. “We salute the teachers and pupils of this school”.

AGRICULTURE:

The Mayor said for the year under review (2022) in the field of agriculture, KMA received 4,100bags of NPK, 3000bags of Sulphate of Ammonia, 3,976litres of liquid and 6,260kilos of powder organic fertilizer which was distributed to 1,441 beneficiaries.

In terms of seedlings, 195,705kilograms of OPV maize, 185,030kilograms of Hybrid maize and 32, 600kilograms of rice were received. Altogether, a total of 8, 219 people benefited from its distribution.

YOUTH AND SPORTS

KMA boss said they are finding ways of channeling the energy of the youth in the metropolis into more productive areas. “We are trying to divert their attention from unhealthy habits such as gambling, substance abuse and other nefarious activities into sports.To do this, the KMA offered some support to the Metro Cross-Country Championships. I must say the athletes made us proud at the National level.We are also planning to support the juvenile teams with jerseys, footballs, trophies, etc to serve as a motivation for them”,he added.

URBAN MOBILITY

Hon.Samuel Pyne admitted that urban mobility continues to be of great concern to them. According to him,”congestion continues to be a headache for us, especially in the CBD. This phenomenon can be attributed to the “waawaa” transport operations, loading at unapproved points and the use of pavements and walkways for trading.A task force is on the ground working to help check these anomalies. We are however, brainstorming for lasting solutions to this challenge”.

 

Sustainable Urban Mobility Project (SUMP)

This intervention, financed by the AgenceFranÇaise deDéveloppement (AFD) is in the process of preparing a plan to guide the development of transport in the city for the next five (5), ten (10) and Fifteen (15) years. “We are doing this in collaboration with greater and expanded Kumasi which is made up of sixteen Assemblies. We are looking forward to the establishment of a Transport Authority to steer affairs in this sector for our greater good.

 

Kumasi Urban Mobility Project (KUMAP)

The KMA, with the support of the World Bank is implementing the KUMAP. The aim of this project is to establish a Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system in the city. The Ejisu and Abuakwa road corridors have been selected for now. The necessary capacity building for our technical staff has been done. The prescribed processes and procedures are far advanced for the infrastructure works to begin.
