The former President and Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr John Dramani Mahama, has questioned the credibility of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice-President and Flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), to hold the highest office of the land (presidency).

According to him, the 2024 presidential election is a make or break affair for the country, because Ghanaians cannot reward someone who runs away from responsibilities to lead themMr. Mahama made these comments on Wednesday, 19th June 2024, at the Christian Service University (CSU) 50th anniversary public lecture held at Odeneho-Kwadaso in Kumasi.

The public lecture was on the theme: “Sustainability of Democracy in Africa: The Ghanaian Experience”.

The former President said it is unimaginable that someone who is running away from an economy that has put hardship on even the elderly to suffer financial haircuts would still try to convince Ghanaians that the economy is in a much better position than the economy in which debts servicing was done timeously without default and no one suffered any financial loss.

According to him, the presidency cannot be handed over to someone who presents himself as a driver’s mate.

The NDC flagbearer disclosed that the focus of his next government would be on sustainable economy, adding that the NDC would seek to take over greater control of our natural resources and move towards processing, while attracting investment in areas such as farming, industry, agribusiness and tourism.

He said his government would also add export items such as palm oil, salt, coffee, soya, cassava, cashew and cassava products which would impact on the country’s export potential.

He stressed that corruption and the abuse of office to the detriment of the citizens would not be tolerated, adding that the next Mahama would not be a clearing agent like the current president.

He said corruption institutions would work without political interferance, while persons who are caught in corrupt practices would be prosecuted.

According to him, there would be a greater transparency and accountability in the way governance operates, and the voices of the citizens would matter in the next NDC government.

He reiterated that he would curtail the excessive politicisation of institutions such as the Judiciary and the Electoral Commission and other independent constitutional bodies through major constitutional reforms.
