OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT JOHN D. MAHAMA

Dear President Mahama,

Ghana’s Security Crisis: Mr President Momo Vendors and highway Commuters are living in Fears

By Kwabena Frimpong (Deputy Protocol Director,NPP)

Ghana is facing an alarming security crisis, with innocent citizens falling victim to violent crimes daily. The recent surge in attacks on Mobile Money (MoMo) vendors and daylight armed robberies on highways has created widespread fear and uncertainty. As criminals operate with impunity, the government and security agencies must take swift action to protect lives and restore law and order.

MoMo Vendors: A Business Under Attack

MoMo vendors have become easy targets for criminals, with many being robbed, assaulted, and even killed in broad daylight. These hardworking individuals provide essential financial services, yet they operate in constant fear of attack.

Every week, new reports emerge of MoMo vendors being shot dead or brutally attacked by armed robbers who make away with their daily earnings. The lack of police protection has left many vendors vulnerable, forcing some to close their businesses early or shut down completely. This not only affects their livelihoods but also limits access to financial services for ordinary citizens.

If urgent measures are not taken, we risk creating an environment where businesses cannot thrive, and people cannot safely conduct transactions. The government must act now by deploying police patrols to protect MoMo vendors and ensuring that those behind these attacks are swiftly arrested and prosecuted.

Ghana’s highways, once safe for travelers and traders, have now become hunting grounds for armed robbers. Innocent civilians, including traders, drivers, and passengers, are being attacked, robbed, and sometimes killed at dawn.

A Call to Action: Ghana Deserves Better

Mr President,Ghanaians deserve to live and work without fear. The attacks on MoMo vendors and highway robberies are clear signs that our security system is failing. It is time for the government to take responsibility and ensure the safety of its people.

As concerned citizens, I suggest:

  • Increased police presence in high-crime areas.

  • Strict enforcement of laws against armed robbery.

  • Better intelligence gathering to prevent crimes before they happen.

  • Community-based security initiatives to support law enforcement.

  • Deploy armed police and military patrol teams to crime-prone highways.

  • Install CCTV surveillance and security checkpoints at key locations.

  • Ensure swift investigations and harsh punishments for those caught engaging in these crimes.

  • Assigning Security personnel near Momo operational areas

This is not just a security issue—it is a national crisis. If immediate action is not taken, criminals will continue to terrorize innocent Ghanaians, putting the entire nation at risk.

Mr. President, Ghana is under attack. It is time to rise to the occasion and protect the people you swore to serve. The time for talk is over—we need action now.
