As the largest opposition party in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares to conduct its internal elections from the polling stations’ executives level through to the national level, the incumbent executives and the incumbent Members of Parliament (MP) have been advised to campaign on their own track record and achievements rather than banking their hopes on the victory of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the just-ended presidential primary.
Mr Patrick Kwame Frimpong, the leading member of NPP, KMA PM, who’s also the longest-serving Assembly Member for the Krofrom East electoral area within the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), has cautioned.

Speaking to “The New Trust” newspaper on Thursday, 5th February, 2026, Mr Frimpong said the majority of incumbent Members of Parliament, polling stations, constituencies, and regional and national officers, especially those who openly campaign for the 2028 NPP flagbearer elect, have assumed that they’ll also be automatically elected or retained in the upcoming internal elections.
He cautioned that “the fact that you campaigned for Dr Bawumia, the former vice president and 2024 presidential candidate, and he has been elected again by the majority of the delegates in your area doesn’t and shouldn’t give you an advantage over other potential aspirants at the various levels.

“The majority of NPP delegates trusted and had confidence in Dr Bawumia’s leadership and capability of leading the NPP to victory in 2028, and that can’t be said about the incumbent MPs and party officers.
For fairness, transparency, and the needed party unity, that shouldn’t be measurements for the election of polling station, constituency, regional, and national, as well as sitting MPs.”

Mr Frimpong, who doubles as the Dean of Ashanti presiding members (PMs) and NALAG national vice president, said to ensure genuine unity in the party after the presidential primary, the party leadership should ensure that no one takes any undue advantage of the election of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia before or during the upcoming internal elections.
As we speak now, some MPs, constituencies, and national offices have started action and inaction to deceive the delegates in that direction. “If you’re an elected or appointed officer at any level and you think and believe you’re worthy of leading the party at any level again or contesting for the first time, campaign on your track record and achievements and stop using Dr Bawumia’s name.”
