With barely three weeks to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race slated for 31st January, 2026, the campaign of the former Minister for Education, who doubles as the incumbent Member of Parliament for the Bosomtwe Constituency in the Ashanti region, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum, has got a major boost, with many leading NPP members and political watchers, among other stakeholders, making a strong case for him as the most suitable candidate from the “political world bank” of the NPP (Ashanti) to lead the party to victory come the 2028 general election.

A cross section of NPP members, as well as many political watchers and the general public, are supporting Dr Adutwum, citing his ability to unite all factions after the primary, his professional achievements and his vision for the nation.Besides, the leading NPP members, in an interaction to justify why they think the delegates of the party should give Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum the nod to lead them to victory, argued that “Since 1992, certain regions have consistently secured key leadership positions in Ghana’s government.

The Volta Region produced the late John Jerry Rawlings. The Central Region produced the late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills and Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur and Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. The Northern Region has had President John Dramani Mahama and two vice presidents—Alhaji Aliu Mahama and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

The Eastern Region has seen President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ascend to power. And yet, despite our unwavering contributions to Ghana’s development and political stability, the Ashantis have only had one president—John Agyekum Kufuor.

Why should the New Patriotic Party (NPP) once again look beyond Ashanti leadership? Why are we even considering electing another candidate from the Northern or Central Region when the Ashanti Region has distinguished and capable leaders like Dr Adutwum ready to serve?

The leading NPP members, who pleaded for their names to be withheld to avoid twisting of the input of their argument, stressed that, besides the best campaign message, the unique unifying nature and professional achievements of Dr Osei Yaw Addutwum, the delegates of the NPP should consider the aforementioned facts to inform their choice of flagbearer.

During this paper’s interaction with a number of NPP members, especially delegates during the Christmas festivities, the majority of them all commend the decorous manner in which Dr Adutwum has so far conducted his campaign.

One of the delegates said, ‘Dr Osei Yaw Addutwum is slow but sure, man, I can tell you that. ‘Many of us (delegates) and people in the Ashanti region are working behind the scenes for him, and Ghanaians should not be surprised if he pulls a big surprise to win the primary,’ he added.

Interestingly, there’s a strong silent advocate for the people of the Ashanti region, which is the political world bank of the NPP, to also be bold enough to support one of their own, especially Dr Adutwum, who is enjoying support for his leadership style and vision outlined for Ghana should he be given the nod as the NPP presidential candidate and subsequently the next president of the country.
