The Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA),Mr Kwesi Ofori Agyeman, who is popularly known as King Zuba, has acknowledged the big support he is currently enjoying from Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Nananom, Assembly members, and NDC regional executives, as well as residents of the metropolis from both political divides.

“I can tell you that, even though the overlord of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and Nananom gave their support to my predecessors, the kind of support I’m enjoying or receiving is overwhelming,” he revealed.

According to him, 8 months since assumption of office, there is a clear indication that he is doing well and capable of delivery as mayor of Kumasi.”The job is challenging due to recalcitrant traders, drivers and some residents, but I’m committed to working to the expectations of all.

Mr Kwesi Ofori Agyeman, aka King Zuba

King Zuba, as he is affectionately called in the political space, revealed this in an interview with Kofi Boakye, aka Commander One, the host of the “Nkwantannanso” programme on Opemsuo Radio 104.7 FM, a local-based radio station in Kumasi, on Monday, 15th December, 2025.

According to the Kumasi mayor, despite their commitment to ensure cleanliness and provision of dustbins, many residents continue to litter indiscriminately, and there is indiscipline by some drivers.”If we want to be faithful, there has been vast improvement in the sanitation situation from the situation we came to inherit. When I came, about 300 personnel were receiving salary of GHC 350 each, and I had to reduce the number to 110 and increase the salary from GHC 350 to GHC 800 per month.”King Zuba explained that he adopted that strategy for assessment of the situation, and after evaluation, he has seen a positive impact.

He decided to use or get prison inmates involved in keeping the city clean, and now they have been strategically assigned for cleaning the roundabouts. He said many residents have been asking for improvement of streetlights, “Not that I haven’t heard them nor am concerned, but,I’m seriously working on it behind the scenes. Last year, they fixed many streetlights, and there wouldn’t have been the need for new ones this time, but “we have realised that is theft of the streetlights.”So I have to be proactive by adopting a new approach to prevent the theft of the streetlights’ cables to save costs.”Today, as we speak, we’ve started solar light installation in the metropolis. My staff and technical men are on the ground working, and before Christmas, we would have installed 240 poles.

This one wouldn’t have had any theft of cables, etc.King Zuba also revealed that KMA generates 2,000 tonnes of waste on a daily basis and spends a lot of money for management and treatment of the waste.

According to him, unfortunately, most of this waste doesn’t come from KMA but the adjoining Assemblies’ and he was engaging the Local Government Minister for the way forward.

He revealed also that, when he assumed office, KMA was in judgement debt to the tune of Ghc 142 million as a result of wrong termination of contracts, wrong demolition exercises, etc., but he has managed to get a massive downwards review of the debts after his engagement of the Assembly’s debtors.

The major admitted that the major issues confronting the Assembly are management of sanitation and congestion in the Central Business District (CBD), but they are on top of it with the committed team coupled with proactive strategies.

He, therefore, implored all residents and stakeholders to continue to support him to ensure that the city is devoid of congestion and filth so as to ensure accelerated growth.
