The Ashanti Regional Organiser for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Francis Adomako, has vehemently condemned the political persecution and harassment of Mr. Benard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to him, the attempted arrest of Chairman Wontumi last week by some NIB and police personnel and his rearrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO,), after his second day of interrogation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), should be condemned by all Ghanaians.

The call by Dr. Adomako, who is popularly known as Francois, follows the arrest of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Benard Antwi-Boasiako, by officials from EOCO.

Francois, who doubles as the Dean of all Regional Organisers, therefore, called on all security agencies to stop this Rambo style of picking Ghanaians.

“If you allege that someone has committed a crime, take the person to court,” he insisted.

According to him, Chairman Wontumi is a law-abiding citizen. “Take him to court and he would surely be there with his lawyers and stop this Rambo style of arrest,” he added.

The Ashanti NPP Regional Organiser said, “My attention has been drawn to the fact that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP has been arrested by EOCO after being invited by national CID to help in some investigations. Last Friday, we heard that some national security operatives went to his house after an invitation had been issued to come to national CID headquarters of which Wontumi honoured yesterday.

“He was booked to attend again at 3:00 pm only to see on social media that he had been ambushed and arrested by another body. I feel that since he honoured this invitation by CID, it was proper for any other body that wanted to do some more investigations of any alleged crime to invite him instead of arresting him in that manner.”

“This manner of arrest doesn’t help but rather causes fear in the citizenry. The manner of arrest doesn’t help anybody,” he added.

He continued, “The NDC government must sit up and see how best the ordinary Ghanaian looking for a job can get one. Cedi is stable but electricity bills are up. Cost of items and doing business are up. Galamsey is on the ascendency; water bodies are being polluted. Roads are bad, etc. The 24-hour economy has not materialised. These are the things Ghanaians are looking out for and not these kinds of arrest. If you feel he has done anything wrong, take him to court.”

Myjoyonline.com report indicates that Chairman Wontumi’s arrest came shortly after leaving the CID headquarters in Accra.

Chairman Wontumi had been at the CID headquarters for further questioning over his alleged involvement in illegal mining and mining in forest reserves, and entering the forest reserve without authorisation.

He was directed to reappear after he had turned himself in on Monday, 26th May 2025, as part of his bail conditions, and he complied.
