NDC’s electoral performance: Ofosu-Ampofo vs Mosquito
When you read the Constitution of the NDC, it’s obvious that party coordination, organization and campaign to retain or recapture political power is the responsibility of the General Secretary. (This can be found in Article 26, clause 1 subsection B of the Party’s constitution).
If you look at the performance of the NDC in the 2016 elections, you’ll realize that the General Secretary of the party had become very sluggish and ineffective. This was clearly demonstrated in the 2016 electoral result.
Although the 2016 and 2020 electoral outcome is the main focus of this epistle, let’s take a cursory look at the party’s performance from 1992 to date before focusing on the 2016 and 2020 elections.
Presidential results:
In 1992, NDC had 58.4% and NPP had 30.29%
In 1996, NDC had 57% and NPP had 39.6%
In 2000, NDC had 43% and NPP had 56.9%
In 2004, NDC had 44% and NPP had 52.45%
In 2008, NDC had 50.2% and NPP had 49.8%
In 2012, NDC had 50.7% and NPP had 47.74%
In 2016, NDC had 44.6% and NPP had 53.6%
In 2020, NDC had 47.2% and NPP had 51.2%
In 2016, NDC was in gov’t and General Mosquito was the overall National Campaign Manager. In that contest, the NDC lost by over 1 million vote difference. The NDC got 4.8 million votes and NPP got 5.7 million votes.
Fast forward to the 2020 election – Ofosu-Ampofo was National Chairman and leader of the party with Professor Joshua Alabi appointed as the overall Campaign Manager. (New leadership, new formula, new strategy).
Check the outcome: NDC’s presidential figures climbed from 44.6% (2016) to 47.2% (2020) and NPP’s figures declined from 53.6% (2016) to 51.2% (2020).
Check popular votes: in 2016, NDC got 4.8 million votes and NPP got 5.7 million votes. In 2020, the NDC had 6.3 million votes and NPP had 6.69 million votes. The NDC added almost 2 million votes. There you have it!!!
Statistically, what do you see when you compare the performance of the NDC without Ofosu-Ampofo (2016) to the performance of the NDC with political strategist Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo as chairman?
In addition to the above, in 2016, the NDC had 106 Members of Parliament, (lost 52 seats) but in 2020 under the leadership of Ofosu-Ampofo, the party won 137 seats, and for the first time in Ghana’s political history, the NDC (which is in opposition) elected the speaker of parliament.
The difference between Ofosu-Ampofo and Mosquito is clear!
