NPP decides 2028: Is Wontumi eyeing National Chairmanship position

As members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) brainstorm to find out the causes of their terrible defeat in the just-ended general election on December 7 and how to recapture power in 2028, some lobbyists have started clamouring for a change in both the regional and national executives of the party for new faces.

The three-time Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is prominently featured as the next national chairman of the party in a list of potential national executives. The list has gone viral on social media and the handlers of Chairman Wontumi are yet to comment on it.

Lawyer Justin Frimpong Kodua, the incumbent General-Secretary, is the only known current national officer or executive member whose name is captured in one out of four different team lists. The current National Executives of the NPP are led by Mr. Stephen Ayesu Ntim.

The final shortlisted team to recapture power in 2028 has Bernard Antwi-Boasiako as National Chairman; Lawyer Justin Frimpong Kodua as General-Secretary; Kwame Baffoe Abronye DC as national Organiser,Hawa Koomson as national Women’s Organizer and Osei Tinkaro Asare as national youth Organizer Hawa respectively.

Other list featured Bernard Antwi Boasiako as national chairman, Lawyer Justin Frimpong Kodua as general secretary,Titus Glover as National Organiser; Hawa Koomson as Women’s Organiser; T. Tinkaro as Youth Organiser; Carlos Ahenkorah as Treasurer, and Ali Suraj as Nasara Co-ordinator.

The other names competing for the position of general-secretary in the other team lists are Mustapha Hamid, Peter Amewu, while Chairman Wontumi, Hawa Koomson, among other names, run through all the four lists as potential National Chairman, Women’s Organiser, etc.

Brief profile of Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako

He was born on 1st May 1976 in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

According to him, he was brought up in a humble and modest manner.

Educational background

He attended a private high school in Ghana and then pursued his college education at Prempeh College; he graduated in 1996.

Mr Antwi-Boasiako is a security expert who studied in London before studying theology in the United States of America.

His younger brother is a Catholic priest. He believes this is sufficient justification for him not to be a priest, thereby opting to marry to fulfil God’s procreation plan.

Career

Chairman Wontumi is a prominent businessman in Ghana. He owns a gold mining company in Obuasi and other parts of the country. He is also linked to HANSOL Mining Limited and Akonta Mining Limited, which he once claimed generated a daily income of $1 million.

He is also in the media business. He is the CEO of Wontumi Media and Group of Communications. The media company owns pro-NPP media outlets such as Wontumi Radio and Movement TV which operate in Kumasi and Accra respectively, including many other new radio and television stations.

Politics

Before becoming the Ashanti Regional chairman, he was the constituency chairman for Bosomtwe.

Many political watchers believe he managed to become Ashanti Regional chairman in 2014 due to his charitable work in the country.

He went unopposed in his second term in 2018 when his only contender, Nana Asare Bediako, the then Asokwa Constituency chairman, decided to step down weeks before election day.

For his third term in 2022, Wontumi faced a formidable contender, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, but he won by 464 votes.
