By:Charles Ampong

The President of the Council of Zongo Chiefs of Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District of Ashanti, Chief Abdullai Mohammed has advocated for the establishment or dedication of special “galamsey” courts in every region to fast-track prosecution of persons involved in illegal mining (galamsey).

He said the rate at which “our lands are being destroyed called for stringent efforts in order to save the current and future generations”. Chief Abdullai Mohammed told this paper that the Constitution should be revisited and gives special powers to Chiefs to deal ruthlessly with anyone who is seen or found to be destroying the country’s natural resources most especially our lands”.

He said the current fight against “galamsey ” can simply be handled by big chiefs if they are given the powers to do so. According to him, these big chiefs would further give powers to their sub chiefs to strictly monitor all the small scale mining activities to ensure if they were complying with the rules and regulations of the lands.

Chief Abdull Mohammed noted that these chiefs would be sanctioned by way of distoolment  if they failed to discharge their duties. He said those who are found guilty of not following the rules and the laws about their concession will also being sent to these courts for appropriate actions. He said apart from conviction by the competent courts, they must also be forced to pay a certain amount of money to hire people to cover every pit they have dug.
