The National Vice-Chairman of the National Association of
Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), who doubles as the Presiding Member (PM) for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr. Patrick Kwame Frimpong, has bemoaned the politicisation of the association by politicians.
According to him, NALAG is a not-for-profit organisation (NGO) which does not belong to any political party, but rather it works with many organisations for the promotion of good governance in the country.

He has, therefore, called on the newly elected unit committee members, Assembly members, government appointees, MMDCEs and staff of NALAG not to allow politicians to politicise the activities of NALAG.
“NALAG was set up with specific aims and objectives, and all stakeholders, especially politicians, should respect that for the promotion of good governance for the betterment of the country,” he pointed out.
According to him, NALAG is primarily governed by the Local Governance Act of 2016, Act 936. This Act harmonises various existing legislations on local governance, including the Local Government Service Act, 2003, and the Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462). NALAG’s membership is comprised of all district assemblies created under Act 462 and other subsidiary legislations.
Speaking to “The New Trust” newspaper on Thursday, 29th May 2025, Mr. Frimpong, who is also the Dean of Association of Ashanti PMs, said “the current happenings are so worrisome that some of us cannot sit down unconcerned for the efforts of the initiators of NALAG to be wasted.”
He explained that, Article 2 & 3 of the NALAG constitution stated clearly Aims, Objective, Program and Activities Of the Association.
The aims are to assist in maintaining high standards of local government (administration) service delivery, provide a forum for discussions and exchange of ideas, experience and information on matters of mutual interest related to local government and decentralisation.
Mr. Frimpong, who is also the elected Assembly member for the Krofrom East Electoral Area within the KMA, is strongly advocating all members of the association to resist the politicisation of their programmes and activities.
“Let’s all join hands together to build a stronger and a more vibrant NALAG for the promotion of development and the welfare of its members,” he pleaded.
“NALAG also works with several institutions and organisations, including embassies in Ghana, so let’s all ensure that the association is not politicised…Let’s help promote the agenda of NALAG devoid of politics,” he added.
