TWO REMANDED OVER DUBIOUS CAR DEAL

 

 

The Ejisu District Court in Ashanti has remanded two persons in police custody for allegedly defrauding a building engineer of 41 thousand Cedis under the pretext of selling a vehicle to him. Akwasi Wiafe, a 42-year carpenter and Akwasi Ofori, a trader aged 46 are to make their next appearance in court on the 15th of this month.

Akwasi Wiafe hails from Nkoranza in the Bono East region and his accomplice Akwasi Ofori resides at Atonsu in Kumasi, while the building engineer, who is the complainant in the case resides in Sunyani. Presenting the facts of case to the Court, Chief Inspector Yvonne Asomaning said on the 11th of last month, the complainant and his brother who is also a witness in the case were travelling from Accra to Sunyani and on reaching Ejisu Krapa, they spotted a Toyota Corolla LE Saloon Car with registration number GR 7586-21 packed by the roadside with a “FOR SALE” sticker and phone number 0209456408 pasted on the windscreen.

According to Chief Inspector Asomaning, the complainant called the number and told the receiver that he was interested in buying the car. Wiafe and another person who is at large arrived some few minutes later to negotiate the price with the complainant and 41 thousand Cedis was agreed for the purchase.

Chief Inspector Asomaning said the complainant then left for the bank and brought the agreed amount to Wiafe who in turn handed over to him the car key and documents covering the vehicle to the complainant.

Wiafe then told the complainant that he had to collect a passport picture and an Identification Card from the owner of the car who is a nurse at the Ejisu Government Hospital to facilitate the change of ownership. Wiafe then drove the car to the said hospital, with his accomplice, the complainant and his brother as occupants.

Chief Inspector Asomaning said upon reaching the hospital, Wiafe and his accomplice told the complainant and his brother to wait outside, of which they obliged.

However, having waited for a period of time with Wiafe and his accomplice not showing up their phones also switched off, the complainant went to the parking only to find that the Toyota Corolla salon car missing. He later made a formal complaint to the police after searching efforts of searching proved futile.

Chief Inspector Asomaning said, on the 26th of last month, Wiafe and Ofori were spotted with the same vehicle with the “FOR SALE” sticker on the windscreen at Abuakwa-Sepaase Junction. The police at Nkawie were alerted, which effected their arrest.Source:GBC
