100 GHANAIAN TERTIARY STUDENTS RECEIVE MTN BRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

An official ceremony has been held at Faculty of Law,Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST),Kumasi on Friday,21st October,2022 to present scholarship to Fifty(50) of the 100 MTN Bright Scholarship awardees in the northern sector.

 

The leading telecommunication giant, MTN had already presented first Fifty (50) of 100 awardees in the Southern sector of Ghana.

A member of Panel of Judges for the scholarship, Dr.Gorden Sabutey on behalf his colleagues walked participants through the rigorous selection process of the awardees.

According to him, they received a total of One Thousand Six Hundred (1,600) applications and shortlisted 200 and out of the number, 100 were finally selected for this year’s award.

Dr.Sabutey explained that all the Seventeen (17) public Tertiary Institutions across the 16 regions, gender and Persons with Disability (PWDs) among other factors were considered fairly in their final selection.

He revealed that out of the number, Sixty-two (62) were males and Thirty-Eight (38) females .And out of the 100 awardees Three (3) are PWDs.

Mr.Samuel Koranteng,a Board  member of MTN Bright Scholarship Award said the Company is targeting to give out Three Hundred(300) Scholarship in the next three years as part of its commitment to education.

He said this year’s awardees are the first batch of Reloading MTN Bright Scholarship Award which is focusing more on Science,Technology,Engineering and Mathematics(STEM) as well as various Vocational programmes.

Mr.Koranteng said MTN Bright Scholarship was set up to award various sponsorship programmes to well-deserving students across Ghana to pursue courses at different levels of education in Ghana through the scholarship scheme.

According to him, the Scholarship is designed for year one undergraduate students and continuing education students at any public higher institution in Ghana and is only accessible by Ghanaians.

Mr.Samuel Koranteng said the scholarship package covers tuition fees, accommodation, provision of Lap-top, Ghc 1,150 stipend for each semester and other relevant reading materials.

The Board Member announced that MTN-Ghana has so far invested $15 million in the areas of Health, Education and human empowerment which has directly impacted over 4 million Ghanaians and a million other indirectly. He therefore advised the awardees to make the most of the opportunity individually and collectively offered them.”You (awardees) represent 1 out of 5 applicants so you need to study hard to make the different we’re all looking for”.

One of the parents of the beneficiary students,Mad.Abena Agyeiwaa(widow) heaps raises on MTN  for what she described as God-sent sponsorship to relief her from the financial burden of educating her daughter.

Mad. Agyei, a tomatoe seller at Kumasi-Borla market lamented that she couldn’t get the opportunity to go to school and determined to educate her daughter unfortunately, she lost her husband Six years ago and things became unbearable given her sleepless nights.

”I can tell you that since my daughter informed me that she has been selected to be given scholarship by MTN, I can now sleep well. I prayed that God continue to bless MTN for the unprecedented support”. A number of the beneficiaries in an interview with the media also expressed their profound gratitude to MTN,Board members of MTN Foundation, panel of judges and all stakeholders for the timely intervention to further their tertiary education.

They pledged to learn hard to justify the investment made in them through the scholarship package.
