The government has been urged to provide adequate textbooks to basic schools across the country to help reduce the financial burden on parents.
According to Mr Phillip Duah, proprietor of Barima Duah Memorial Educational Complex, many parents are struggling to buy textbooks for their wards due to the high cost of books and the current economic hardship.
They said the lack of textbooks in schools is affecting teaching and learning, as pupils are forced to share few books or go without them.

Speaking in an interview during a short ceremony to sponsor 50 vulnerable students within 15 communities in the Ashanti Region by ABAK Foundation in collaboration with KGL Foundation, Mr Duah noted that education is supposed to be free at the basic level, and therefore government must ensure that schools are supplied with enough textbooks for all subjects.
“Parents are already struggling to pay school fees, buy uniforms, and provide other needs for their children. Adding the cost of textbooks is too much. The government should come to their aid,” he said.

Mr Duah also added that teaching becomes difficult when pupils do not have textbooks to read and do their homework.
“The textbooks are not enough. Sometimes you have to write everything on the board, which wastes contact hours. If the government supplies the books, it will improve performance,” he said.
They, therefore, called on the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to expedite action to supply textbooks to all basic schools to enhance quality education.
