PRESS RELEASE
TO: ALL MEDIA HOUSES
DATE: 3RD DECEMBER 2024

AFRICAN ELECTORAL INSTITUTE CALLS ON THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION, STATE INSTITUTIONS AND STAKEHOLDERS TO ENSURE THEIR SERVICES ARE TOP-NOTCH ON ELECTION DAY.

The African Electoral Institute ( AEI) in its continuous advocacy for a free, fair transparent elections come 7th December 2024, is urging the Electoral Commission, Political Parties and State Institutions such as the Electricity Corporation of Ghana (ECG), the National Communications Authority, including any other Institution whose function in one way or the other has a bearing on the elections, whether directly or indirectly to endeavor to provide top-notch service for a smooth electoral exercise.

In view of this, the African Electoral Institute wishes to state the following,

  1. That, the African Electoral Institute underscores that effective communication is the bedrock of every human endeavor in recent times, hence our call on the National Communications Authority to maintain reliable communication networks to ensure that communication services, including phone and internet services connectivity, remain operational throughout the election period without fail.

  2. That, the Electricity Corporation of Ghana (ECG) should ensure uninterrupted power supply to all polling/collation centres and to all other critical election infrastructure for a smooth electoral process come 7th December 2024.

  3. The authorities of the Electricity Corporation and those at National Communications should put in place standby technical teams to provide support services where and when required in their respective area of work throughout the election period.

  4. That the Electoral Commission should put in place alternative measures or plans in consultation with all the political parties to agree on what method or measures to adopt incase of any technical challenge, be it power failure or lack of internet connectivity.

  5. If possible, the political parties should have their own generators on standby to assist in case of any power outage. Alternative communication gadgets should be procured for all their officers for ease in communication if the Communication Authorities decide to sleep on their job..

  6. The media should be very proactive, professional, and circumspect in their reportage since their mere presence and their lenses play a very vital role in any election process, though not directly but indirectly. The presence of the media at the polling/collation centers keeps all officials, including the security, on their toes and poised to do the right thing.

In conclusion, the African Electoral Institute has been actively involved in the monitoring of the electoral process, from voter registration, to the exhibition of the voter register to the submission of the final voter register to the political parties and now our emphasis is on the importance of having very reliable power and communication services during the day of elections by the above mentioned institutions as the icing on the cake.
God bless our homeland, Ghana.

End.
