Ash. Regional Minister Heaps praises on MTN for awarding Scholarship to 120 Ghanaian students

 

 

The Ashanti Regional Minister,Hon.Simon Osei Mensah has commended the leading telecommunication giant in Ghana,MTN for awarding Scholarship to One hundred and Twenty (120) students under its Bright Scholarship Scheme.

According to him,the scholarship scheme clearly demonstrates MTN-Ghana’s corporate social responsibility to it operation areas.
This, he said is highly commendable and should be emulated by other Organizations or Companies.

Mr.I.K.Achempong made the commendation in a speech ready on behalf of Hon.Simon Osei Mensah at the official presentation ceremony to Sixty (60) batch of the 120 awardees held at Faculty of Law,Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)-Kumasi on Friday,8th September,2023.

The Regional Minister said the ruling Government led by Nana Akufo-Addo is committed to provision of quality Education hence the implementation of Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy,STEM,TVET among others.

On his part,Mr.Samuel Koranteng,a Board Member of MTN Ghana Foundation who also spoke on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN-Ghana disclosed that a total of One Hundred Twenty (120) students from public tertiary institutions are being awarded the MTN Bright Scholarship for the 2023/2024 Academic year.

According to him, MTN’s Bright Scholarship seeks to reduce the financial burden on students by catering for the cost of tuition, accommodation, laptop and stipend for each semester.

Mr.Koranteng said in all they received about 1,900 applications from 17 Public Institutions and 200 applicants were shortlisted for the scholarship interview.
He said our of 200 shortlisted,the interview panelists finally settled on 120 students for the 2023 Bright Scholarship Scheme awards.

He explained that this year’s award focused more on STEM, Computer Science, Vocational students,Persons with Disability and students in the Six(6) newly created regions among other factors.

He stressed that MTN is committed to providing opportunities for brilliant and needy students to receive an education that will enhance their livelihoods. “We hope that this year’s edition of Bright Scholarship will touch the lives of students who are in need of financial assistance to complete their education”.

Mr.Sam Koranteng encouraged beneficiaries to take their studies very seriously to make themselves, parents,MTN and the nation proud.The MTN Foundation Board Member gave assurance that they would continue to invest in education ,health , economic empowerment among others.

As a backgrounder:
MTN Bright Scholarship was launched in 2018 to provide financial assistance for needy continuing students in public tertiary institution. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, accommodation, stipend, and a laptop. 400 scholarships have been awarded since the inception of the scheme.

MTN Bright Scholarship falls under the education focus area of the MTN Ghana Foundation. Aside the Bright Scholarship initiative, the Foundation has over the years awarded over 1178 scholarships to students from basic school to tertiary level.

Prof.Wilson Agyare Agyei,the Director of Students Affairs at KNUST also lauded MTN-Ghana continues investment in Education.

He revealed that many students are facing financial challenges and commended MTN for the Bright scholarship Scheme awards.

A cross section of  beneficiaries who spoke to The New Trust Newspaper also heaped praises on MTN Ghana for the support.
