A legal practitioner for the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), lawyer Abraham Amaliba says the Member of Parliament for Assin North is very keen to see Adansi Asokwa MP, Hon KT Hammond jailed for some comments he passed on his ongoing criminal trial.
James Gyakye Quayson has filed a contempt application dated July 7, 2023, in an Accra High Court against Hon. Kobina Tahir Hammond.
Lawyers of the Assin North Constituency believe that the comments made by KT Hammond are highly prejudicial and violate Mr Gyakye Quayson’s right to a fair trial.
In the writ, Counsel Justin Pwavra Teriwajah stated that the Minister of Trade and Industry is brazenly usurping the function of the trial judge and that the Court has the power to commit KT Hammond for contempt.
They are demanding that he be brought before the court to be tried for contempt of court and sentenced to prison if found guilty.
Mr Hammond in a widely circulated video said Mr Quayson will ‘surely be jailed’ after his criminal trial.
The embattled NDC MP is currently standing trial for perjury after it emerged that he had filed his nomination for the 2020 elections despite holding dual citizenship.
But to lawyer Amaliba, who was speaking in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show, ‘Ghana Montie’, the Adansi Asokwa MP’s comment was ‘needless’.
