The Upper East Regional Police on 19th September 2026 arrested seven suspected armed robbers in the Bawku west district of the Upper East Region. In a statement issued by the upper East regional police Command, said the incident formed part of an operation targeting a robbery gang allegedly operating across Binaba, Binduri, Pusiga, Garu, Zebilla and surrounding communities.

Binaba Killing: Family rejects Police ‘Gun Battle’ Story , Demands Justice for Amadu Apiiga & Phillip Avoabilla.
According to the police, suspects arrested during the operation led officers to the Tilli Forest to retrieve weapons they had allegedly concealed there.
The police said the team came under gunfire while at the forest, resulting in a confrontation. Where 3 suspects, including 33-year-old Amadu Apiiga, reportedly sustained gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital.
Following this, the family of Amadu Apiiga and Philip Avoabilla has rejected the police account of their relatives’ deaths at Binaba in the Bawku west District of the Upper East Region, demanding answers and justice over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
At a press briefing held at the family house in Binaba on Thursday, September 24, 2026, the family disputed the claim that the deceased persons engaged police officers in a gun battle.
The family spokesperson, Rev. Awintoam Sampson, who read the statement on behalf of the family, questioned how persons who were reportedly in police custody could have engaged armed officers in a gun battle.
A sister of one of the deceased, said the family was not defending criminal activity but wanted authorities to provide evidence supporting the allegations against their relatives.
She questioned why the suspects could not be taken to court to face the allegations instead of being killed.
“We are calling on well meaning Ghanaian to come to our aid. We are not not against fight against crime, but it should be done properly. How can a suspected case become murder? No was no any evidence into the police alleged before killing them. We need justice for them”
Apiiga Ernestina, said the family had no intention of confronting the security agencies but wanted answers about what happened to their relatives.
She said the family never expected that the decision to take someone from his room to a police station for investigations would eventually result in his death.
The family is therefore demanding clarification on several aspects of the incident, including who arrested the deceased, where they were kept, who authorised their movement to the Tilli Forest and what exactly happened during the alleged exchange of gunfire.Source: Iddrisu Kassim
