A News Desk Report

The family members of a destooled ‘queen mother’ of the Offinso Traditional Council in the Ashanti Region, Nana Ama Nyarko, have officially distanced themselves from any act of disrespect by her to the Overlord of Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the newly installed Paramount Chief of Offinso Traditional Council and Nananom, after she was destooled on Thursday, 11th January 2024.

Nana Kwadwo Adwuma Saparko, the head (abusuapanin) of the Offinso Akonkodease Abusua (Family), made their stance known in an interview with the media on Tuesday, 30th January 2024, at Offinso after traditionally informing the Nananom of Offinso Traditional Council.

Speaking to the media, he said, “Our mission here is very simple. We, the family of Offinso Akonkodease Abusua(family),
came to inform Nana Dwamena Akenten II and Nananom of Offinso Traditional Council that we no longer support Nana Ama Nyarko, the destooled ‘queen mother’ of Offinso as ‘queen mother’ in the name of the family. We pledge our unflinching support to Nana Dwamena Akenten II and Nananom of this Traditional Council.”

“We also want to warn Nana Ama Nyarko not to associate the family in any act that would disrespect the Traditional Council and the Overlord of Asanteman, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

We have already informed her about our decision and we are warning her not to go to market or any place parading herself as ‘queen mother’ of Offinso Traditional Council in the name of Offinso Akonkodease Abusua because we’ll not support that,” he added.

He continued, “We are about 40 members of the family who want to make it clear to Nana Ama Nyarko that her family no more recognises her as ‘queen mother’ of Offinso Traditional Council in the name of Offinso Akonkodease Family, because we can’t challenge Asantehene’s statement.”

The family also appealed to Nananom to perform all the necessary rituals to let the public know that Nana Ama Nyarko is no more the ‘queen mother’ of Offinso Traditional Council.

Opanin Akwasi Owusu Afriyie, an elder of the family, also pointed out that from the onset of the traditional processes to get a new Offinsohene, the family was the first to oppose the nominee by Nana Ama Nyarko before others joined the crusade.

The decision by the family which has been commended by many peace-loving residents came in the wake of reports about Nana Ama Nyarko still parading herself as ‘queen mother’ of the Traditional Council after she was destooled by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Reliable reports accompanied by viral videos indicate that Nana Ama Nyarko, who was publicly destooled by Otumfuo Osei Tutu ll on Thursday, 11th January 2024, at the Manhyia Palace, is allegedly still parading herself as ‘queen mother’ of Offinso Traditional Council at social gatherings.

It would be recalled that Nana Ama Nyarko was destooled by Asantehene for gross insubordination following processes which led to the selection and installation of a new Offinsohene.

According to eyewitnesses report, Nana Ama Nyarko is alleged to have defied all odds, including the authority of Asantehene and travelled to Wenchi in the Brong Ahafo Region for a week-long funeral of a friend.

The report said, “With great pride, she (Nana Ama Nyarko) adorned herself in her queen mother’s attire, accompanied by about 40 elders from the Offinso town, who supported her unflinchingly.

Nana Ama Nyarko, according to the eyewitnesses, made a generous donation of GH¢5,000 known as “Nsua” to the bereaved family. She is reported to have repeated the same act at another funeral at Offinso the following week.

The situation nearly resulted in a confrontation between her followers and some residents who were unhappy about her attitude after Otumfuo Osei Tutu II had publicly destooled her.
