Govt to announce position on Bawku report in 24 hours
President John Dramani Mahama has assured that government will take a clear and definitive position on the Bawku mediation report within 24 hours, as efforts intensify to consolidate peace and advance reconciliation between the feuding factions.

The President made the remarks on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the Presidency after receiving a full report on the mediation process from the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who was tasked earlier this year to lead dialogue aimed at resolving the protracted chieftaincy conflict in Bawku.

“I’m pleased that Otumfuo’s mediation has come to an end and now he has presented a report, and I can assure him that government will look at this report and within the next 24 hours government will issue a statement on its definitive position on the report,” President Mahama said.
He described the presentation of the report as a critical milestone in the peace process, noting that the focus must now shift from dialogue to healing and unity.
According to the President, “the next leg of the journey is to reconcile our brothers from both sides,” underscoring the need for sustained engagement between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities to secure lasting peace.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in presenting the report, emphasised that the process was strictly a mediation exercise and not arbitration, stressing that all parties had willingly submitted themselves to the process and should therefore be bound by its outcomes. He noted that the aim was not to determine winners or losers, but to establish facts and build consensus in the interest of peace.
The Asantehene was appointed by President Mahama earlier in 2025 to lead mediation efforts in the conflict-prone municipality. The process began in April with separate consultations with representatives of the feuding sides, was briefly suspended, and later resumed in May, contributing to a period of relative calm in the area.
President Mahama thanked the Asantehene for his leadership and commitment, assuring him that government would act promptly and responsibly on the recommendations contained in the report.
The anticipated government statement is expected to outline the state’s next steps, including mechanisms to support reconciliation, restore trust between the factions, and prevent a relapse into violence in Bawku.By:Jonathan Adjei
