The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA),Hon.Samuel Pyne has announced that the first batch of three projects earmarked for implementation under International Municipal Investment Fund(IMIF) has been completed.
According to him, all the projects are self-financed, and therefore have the capacity to pay-back the loan that would be accessed.”All feasibility studies on the projects are completed and arrangements will commence soon to raise funds through corporate bonds for the execution of the projects.
The Projects include; Construction of Multi storey car park near Kumasi Central, Completion of the Krofrom Market and introduction of Bus Rapid Transit Project(BRT) in Greater Kumasi.It was indicated that the World Bank had shown interest to finance the BRT Project.
These projects when implemented would enhance mobility within the city, especially the CBD. Consequently, the Assembly would access the funds in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development”.
The above was contained in the report of the Metropolitan Authority presented by the Mayor,Hon.Samuel Pyne during the 2nd ordinary meeting of the 3rd session of the 8th Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly held on Wednesday 26th and Thursday,27th October,2022 at Prempeh Assembly hall.
Touching on the second batch of projects to be financed with the IMIF,Kumasi Mayor said ,as required KMA needs to submit three projects under the second batch of the project.
The Executive or Authority Committee therefore proposes to the Members the following projects: construction of 500 capacity Hotel with 2000 conference hall facility, construction of 1000 capacity hostel at KNUST or KsTU, establishment of a factory to create jobs and improve the revenue base of the Assembly of the Assembly.Hon.Pyne said after lengthy deliberation, three projects were recommended for the consideration of which one is to be approved by the august house.They include; (1)establish a poultry feed factory at Sokoban wood village .
This, factory he explained will produce poultry feeds to serve the poultry farmers within the Greater Kumasi and Ashanti region.
(2)Establish a plastic Recycling factory for the production of bricks ,pavement blocks, waste bins and plastic chairs.The mayor said this project will take away the uncontrollable but unavoidable plastic waste in the system.That it will further generate a lot of revenue for the Assembly while also creating jobs for the unemployed youth.The project also has the potential to receive funding from donors and Development Partners underpinned by its capacity to improve environmental sanitation and generate revenue for KMA.
On the third (3) recommendation of establishing a tissue paper manufacturing company,Hon.Samuel Pyne explained that the factory will manufacture toilet rolls, tissue paper and other related products.”Since there is no such factory in Kumasi,its establishment will enhance the supply chain in utilizing waste paper from schools and other institutions within Greater Kumasi and also create subsidiary jobs”.
He told the members that the underneath recommendations were further adopted for consideration.(a) The committee should organize a business forum with the business community to seek partnerships for investment in the economic potential of the metropolis,(b) The Assembly should initiate discussions to take over all the MPs completed projects to ensure ownership and sustainability as well as (c)The Assembly should lobby for corporate support to implement some of the MTDP and AAP Projects”.
In his opening remarks,Hon.Patrick Kwame Frimpong,the Presiding Member(PM) for KMA who doubles as Assembly member for Krofrom East electoral area commended the Management, staff and members of the Assembly for their contributions in ensuring good rating of KMA after District Performance Assessment Tool(DPART).He also seized opportunity to urge the Mayor to be extra vigilante to ensure transparent data gathering or registration, verification among other process of traders for ongoing phase II of Kejetia reconstruction project. According to Hon.Frimpong to ensure that all traders who were relocated to pave way for the project get their shops back and extra ones transparently and fairly allocated to applicants all measures to be put in place to avoid any confusion.
This, he said will go away to ensure smooth allocation of the shops after completion of the second phase of the market devoid of any challenges.
