Ahead of Saturday’s national delegates’ conference of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, “The New Trust” newspaper has gathered that seven major proposals have emerged as key for consideration and adoption.

The key among the proposed amendments is making the presidential candidate rather than the national chairman the leader of the party.

The seven key proposals that have come to the attention of this paper are as follows: The need to make the presidential candidate rather than the national chairman the leader of the party, restoring the President to the National Steering Committee, appointment of additional vice chairpersons at the national level, regional and constituency levels.

The rest of the key proposals include the appointment of deputy regional and constituency communication officers, making the offices of first, second and third vice chairperson distinct elective positions, permitting all card-bearing members of the party delegates in presidential and parliamentary primaries, as well as adding IT officers to the regional and constituency executive structure.

The editorial team of “The New Trust” newspaper has been inundated with calls and messages coupled with interactions with leading members of the NPP over their overwhelming support for conference to take a decisive decision to make the presidential candidate of the party leader rather than the national chairman of the party which, according to them, has been on the table for several years.

Their calls and messages followed the Tuesday (29th September 2026) edition of the paper banner headline “Razak Kojo Opoku pushes for amendment of NPP constitution to make presidential candidate leader of the party “.

Several leading members believe the delegates for the Kumasi conference should not delay debate on this but rather be bold to adopt the proposals, especially to make the Presidential Candidate the leader of the NPP rather than the national chairman, as this is a good practice in many renowned democratic countries.

Meanwhile, a news item monitored from “Otec 102.9 FM”, a local based radio station, has also collaborated support for key proposal to make the presidential candidate the leader of party.

Some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region have called on delegates to the party’s upcoming National Delegates Conference to make the presidential candidate the leader of the party instead of the National Chairman.

According to them, the move would ensure clarity in leadership, unity of command, and effective direction as the party prepares for the 2028 general election.

Speaking to “OTEC News” on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, ahead of the conference scheduled for Saturday, the party members said having the National Chairman as leader creates dual power centres which often lead to friction, mixed messaging and power struggles between the party headquarters and the flagbearer’s camp.

They noted that, globally, the presidential candidate is recognized as the face and leader of the party going into a general election.

One member explained that making the presidential candidate the leader would give him the authority to shape the campaign message, strategy, and team while aligning responsibility with accountability.

Another added that when the candidate is made leader, it would prevent internal conflicts and ensure that all party structures rally behind one clear leader.

The members, therefore, urged delegates to vote massively for the amendment to make the party more united, focused and formidable, ahead of the 2028 polls.
