Mr. Kwabena Nsenkyire, the immediate-past Ashanti Regional First Vice Chairman of the Governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a close friend of the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Ejisu, Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, has called on the Ghana police to immediately invite the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako aka Chairman Wontumi, Northern Regional NPP financial secretary, the staff of the hotel where the alleged food poisoning occurred, among others, for questioning.

According to him, he suspects a foul play in the alleged food poisoning which is said to have led to the sudden demise of Dr. Kumah, a man he described as a long-time friend, a patriot, humble and a lover of all manner of people.

Chairman Wontumi and Late John Kumah

Reacting to a viral video of Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a broadcast journalist with Wontumi TV/Radio , who detailed how the late Ejisu MP was poisoned in an interview with Wofa Alhassan Okugyeabour on Mighty KTV & Radio last Friday, the leading NPP member, who doubles as a former Ashanti Regional National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), stressed that Chairman Wontumi should be invited for questioning if truly Dr. Kumah was poisoned.

Kwabena Nsenkyire

He said, “I know both John Kumah and Chairman Wontumi very well, and they wouldn’t just eat any food from an unknown source … the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) should immediately take over the matter and invite all the people who have been mentioned for questioning.”

Chairman Kwabena Nsenkyire, who spoke from his current base in Canada, said, “Oheneba Nana Asiedu has done well by revealing some secrets and that could help the police to do proper investigations.”

“That is the more reason I want Chairman Wontumi, the staff members of the said hotel who were on duty on 23rd October 2023 when the alleged food poisoning occurred in Tamale to be invited for questioning,” he added.

Mr Nsenkyire said he sees a foul play in the alleged poisoning, especially when another broadcast journalist, Captain Smart, in a viral video, has also indicated that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh aka Napo is the next to die of food poisoning all in relation to lobbying for a running mate to Dr. Bawumia ahead of the 2024 general election.

“We can’t afford to lose another NPP member or Ghanaian in the name of alleged food poisoning. CID should take up the matter and do a thorough investigation …” he noted.

Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi issued the statement below hours after Dr. Kumah’s death was confirmed.

The statement reads: “My good friend and brother John Kumah. My heart is heavy. My eyes are full of tears. I am devastated and distraught. I have been struggling to find the appropriate words to describe how I feel right now, because I know how you would have reacted if I were in your position. It is a mixed feeling of disbelief and shock. And this unfortunate news takes me back to some few months ago.

I remember how you stood by my side and ensured that I survived at the time that I was helplessly dying. Little did I know that I was going to survive only for me to be confronted with this devastating news of your passing months later.

I have lost a loyal friend and faithful brother whose loss is simply irreplaceable, not only to me, but to the region as well.

Rest well, my brother. We will surely meet in heaven one day.

Your brother and friend,
Chairman Wontumi.”
