With barely six months to Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has organised a two-day workshop for journalists in the middle sector of the country, after a similar one was recently held in Greater Accra for the southern sector.
The workshop, which was attended by news editors, senior journalists and broadcast journalists from the Ashanti, Bono and Ahafo regions, was held from 24th to 25th June 2024 at Miklin Hotel in Kumasi.
The workshop aimed at training over 60 journalists across the country ahead of the forthcoming general election. It was on the theme: “Elections in Digital Age: Countering Hate Speech and Misinformation on Social Media Platforms for Peaceful Elections”.
A group picture of facilitators and participants
The main purpose of the training workshop was to equip media practitioners with the needed information to counter or combat disinformation and misinformation, especially before, during and after the upcoming general election.
Dr.Wilberforce S. Dzisah,Dr. Edward Ampratwum and Ismail Nii Akwei
The organisers said the purpose was also to build the capacity of the participants, promote peace devoid of hate speech and to disseminate factual information to the public at all times.
The workshop was part of UNESCO’s multi-donor programme on freedom of expression and safety of journalists.
A section of the participants
The main facilitators of the workshop were: Dr. Wilberforce S. Dzisah, the former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ); Ismail Nii Akwei, an international journalist/founder of Media Literacy Advocate; Dr. Daniel Nkrumah, Dr. Edward Ampratwum, as well as Mr. Abdul Hamid Yakub, UNESCO Programme Officer.
In an interview with the media after the workshop, Mr. Abdul Hamid Yakub, Communication and Information Officer, UNESCO, who had earlier highlighted the overview of the project objectives and expected outcomes, was confident that if participants and all journalists in the country combined the knowledge acquired from the training and what they already know, they would be able to counter disinformation and misinformation.
Mr. Yakub, Dr. Wilberforce S. Dzisah, Dr. Daniel Nkrumah, a communication expert, and Ismail Nii Akwei stressed the need for journalists to abide by the GJA code of ethics, stand firm for the truth, double check their facts and desist from allowing their platforms to be used for the promotion of hate speech, racial or religious hatred which is tantamount to incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence in the country.
They also called for the safety of journalists, especially female journalists, because research has shown that they are easily targeted.
Participants were taken through topics such as: Definition of Disinformation, Misinformation and Malinformation, Social Media and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data and Machine Learning & Impact Electoral Processes.
Other key topics were: Hate Speech and its Impact on Electoral Processes, The Rabat Action Plan on the Prohibition of Incitement to National, Racial or Religious Hatred that Constitutes Incitement to Discrimination, Hostility or Violence, Electoral Violence and Gender-Based Violence during Election Period.
Again, the facilitators walked participants through topics such as: Technological Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) during Elections, Violence against Journalists.
Dr. Edward Ampratwum of UNDP made a presentation on “The Election Cycle: the Main Targets of Disinformation, Electoral Contexts and Electoral-Related Conflict Prevention”.

Our attention has been brought to reports in mainstream and social media suggesting that the Court of Appeal has dismissed the appeal filed by our Client Kwabena Adu Gyamfi, alias Victor Kusi Boateng (hereinafter referred to as Appellant), against the ruling of the High Court on the 2nd of May 2023, dismissing the application for committal for contempt of the Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (hereinafter referred to as Respondent).
These false reports have been published on www.myjoyonline.com and other media outlets under the misleading heading above.
The publication on myjoyonline.com reads “The Court of Appeal has thrown out an application filed by Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, Secretary to the board of Trustees of the National Cathedral project.
The suit sought to restrain the member of parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa from discussing him concerning the National Cathedral project. Before Wednesday’s ruling, the founder and overseer of the Power Chapel International had lost two similar suits at the High Court.”
Rev.Kusi Boateng
We wish to state that the above report is a figment of the imagination of the originator of this publication and does not in any way or manner, reflect the proceedings before the Court of Appeal on either the 25th of June 2024 or 26th of June 2024. The proceedings culminating in the rulings by the Court of Appeal on the 26th of June 2024 can be summarized as follows:
The High Court dismissed an application for committal for contempt of the
Respondent on the 2nd of May,2023.
Piqued by the ruling of the High Court, the Appellant filed a Notice of Appeal
on the 10th of May 2023 against the said ruling, canvassing 3 grounds of
appeal.
On the 17th of April 2023, the Court of Appeal granted leave for the Appellant
to file additional ground of appeal and which additional ground of appeal has
since been filed.
On the 19th of April 2024, the Appellant filed an application for the Court of
Appeal to extend the time within which the Appellant will be required to file
written submissions in support of the appeal.
On the 30th of April 2024, the Respondent filed an application to strike out the
grounds of appeal contained in the Notice of Appeal filed on the 10th of May
Both motions filed on the 19th of April 2024 and 30th of April 2024, were
scheduled to be heard on the 25th of June 2024.
When the motion filed on 30th of April 2024 was called for hearing, the
Respondent through his lawyers, raised an objection to the constitution of the
3 court of appeal judges on the following grounds:
a. That he had read in the Daily Post newspaper that another Court of
Appeal Judge was supposed to be presiding on the panel
b. That the absence of that Court of Appeal Judge on the current panel is an
indication of an attempt by the Chief Justice to constitute a panel which is
biased against the Respondent.
c. That the Respondent’s information is that the Chief Justice is a Church
member of the Appellant and so the Respondent is not convinced that he
will be given a fair trial in the matter.
We responded to the preliminary objection as not grounded in law and facts
and no evidence has been adduced of the alleged bias against the Respondent.
The Court of Appeal, after hearing the preliminary objection, also listened to
the application by the Respondent to strike out some of the grounds of
appeal.
The Court of Appeal then adjourned the matter to the 26th of June 2024. The
business for the 26th of June 2024 was as follows:
a. Ruling on the preliminary objection raised to the constitution of the panel
of judges
b. Ruling on the application to strike out some of the grounds of appeal
c. Hearing of the application for extension of time to file written submission
in support of the appeal.
On the 26th of June 2024 when the case was called, the Court of Appeal
a. Dismissed the preliminary objection raised to the constitution of the panel
as without merit with no order as to cost.
b. Granted the application by the Respondent and struck out some of the
grounds of appeal and awarded cost of Gh 3,000.00 in favor of the
Respondent.
c. Heard the argument for extension of time to file the written submissions in
respect of the appeal and granted the said application by the Appellant.
There was no order as to cost.
12. The Court of Appeal further ordered that the Appellant should file his written
submissions in support of the appeal within 7 days from today.
Contrary to the publications and social media reports, there was no application filed at the Court of Appeal or any other court for that matter filed by the Appellant to restrain the Respondent from “discussing him (Appellant) concerning the National Cathedral project.” Further, the appeal against the ruling dismissing the application for committal for contempt has not been struck out or dismissed. The substantive ppeal is yet to be heard by the court of appeal
We therefore entreat all persons to disregard any publication or reports which do not reflect the record of proceedings as summarized above.signed.Bobby Benson

The Parliamentary Candidate of the NPP for Sekyere Afram Plains Constituency, George Akom has tapped into the agriculture potential of the district with high powered delegation of investors from China.
This welcome news was a way of having a mutual partnership with the investors to explore the high potential of agriculture in the district to support the value chain of agricultural produce. Sekyere Afram Plains district in the Ashanti region has the largest landmark of arable lands which can cultivate varieties of food crops and other agriculture produce.
The district which has about 80 percent of the citizens being farmers depend on manual and individual farming for their livelihood. This type of farming has made some of the farmers losing interest to enage in farming activities due to lack of support for mechanized farming and even access to market for their farm produce.
The high potential of the agriculture in the district has not been fully explored because of lack investors who could set up factories to support the value chain in the agriculture sector in the district.
It was in this light that the Parliamentary Candidate who is a native of the district has made conscious effort to solve the problem by bringing international investors with experience and have the needed capacity for agriculture investment to set eco- system of factories that could absorb many of the agriculture produce in the district.
The delegation that visited the district engaged with farmers, agric experts, traditional leaders and all stakeholders to share the concept of the factories with them.
During the interaction with stakeholders, the team explained that they were going to set about four factories in the area of rice milling, starch production, poultry feed and furniture making which could cater for many of the farm produce the farmers cultivate in the district.
In addition, there would be demonstration farms that would support the transfer of knowledge in technology farming and modern agricultural practices. With the establishment of the factories, about 2000 employees were to be employed to work in those factories.
Farmers would was be supported with technical assistance to increase their farm yields that would support the raw materials for the factories
The team took the opportunity to visit the various land sites proposed to be used for the factories which was about 250 acre land.
Mr. George Akom expressed his appreciation to the team for the bold step and risk taken to invest in the district which in the long run would solve many problems that farmers always experience in the district.
He commended the Chiefs and all stakeholders for their willingness to support the project. The farmers were very enthused about the project which they described as long awaited dream and breakthrough for farmers in the district.
The team finally assured the citizens that they were ready to work with all stakeholders in the district to achieve the target of high production for export and local consumption.

The Paramount Chief of the Prang Traditional Area in the Pru West District of the Bono East Region, Nana Kwadwo Nyarko III, has said he will forever be grateful to the Akufo-Addo administration for transforming the socio-economic condition of the people in the area.
According to him, the district has had its fair share of the national cake, and he believes the people will transfer the gesture into votes in the upcoming general election.
Nana Nyarko made these comments in an interview on Friday, 21st June 2024.
The chief said some people often misquote him and associate him with the ruling New Patriotic Party. He denied it, saying it is not factual.
He explained that, as a visionary chief, he needs to always commend any government that brings progress and development to his people, so as to encourage that government to do more for them.
Nana Kwadwo Nyarko III
The Pranghene, a former Council of State member during former President Jerry John Rawlings’s administration, further explained that he was ready to praise any other government in future that would also bring similar developmental projects to his area for the betterment of his people.
The ongoing Prang town roads project
However, he said, as a respected chief, he does not dabble in partisan politics.
Nana Nyarko recounted how Prang was neglected in terms of progress and development but, fortunately, his people had now witnessed massive development in the areas of education, health infrastructure, roads, water expansion, among other social interventions.
He disclosed that his predecessor, Nana Kwadwo Nyarko II, prior to his demise, advised him to always have a positive mindset, be accommodative, be willing to always forgive others, be neutral, fair and above all be God-fearing to make the Prang paramountcy an enviable one.
Regarding the reshaping of the Prang town and the Agenda 111 hospital project of which Pru West is a beneficiary, the chief said he would organise a durbar and lead his people to thank the government for improving the state of Prang.
Concerning the Bono East Regional feeder roads office located at Prang which had already been commissioned but the staff had not reported yet, he said he had reliably been informed that water was being connected to the area to address the challenge.

Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere, a former President of Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) and Diplomat, has commended the contributions of Ghana’s media in the development of the country.
According to him, the media has contributed to Ghana’s democracy and development more than any profession in the country, for which reason it must be commended.
Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere
He made these comments at the 75th anniversary of GJA public lecture series held in Kumasi on Tuesday,18th June 2024, at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST).
The 75th GJA anniversary public lecture was under the topic: “75 Years of Excellence in Journalism: Honouring the Past and Embracing the Present”.
The public lecture was organised by GJA, in collaboration with the Department of Language and Communication Studies, KNUST.
He said the National Media Commission (NMC) should never compromise on its vision, but rather live up to its responsibility and social contract with the people of Ghana and promote both ethical and responsible journalism at all times. It should also embrace what the future holds for all journalists.
According to him, the effectiveness of the NMC cannot only be achieved in the passage of broadcasting law; that would empower NMC to carry out its duties…
He expressed concerns over ethical violation, sensationalism and misinformation which Ghana’s media should avoid.
According to him, Ghanaian journalists should have every reason to be proud of their impact and contributions since the Gold Coast days.
Professor Amin Alhassan, Director- General, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, also stated that GJA gave birth to Ghana’s independence…
He added that all media houses are going through very difficult times and it is time to have serious conversations about it in order to rescue the journalism industry.
He mentioned that platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, etc, do not invest in production, but they take the best of advertising revenues.
He stressed that, as a people, there was the need to have a conversation to reflect on it to save media houses.
He stated that the future of journalism is at stake, hence the need to start a conversation to help protect it from losing its core mandate.
