The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) extends its heartfelt congratulations to Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko on his recent appointment as the Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA). This announcement was made by the Presidency on January 22, 2025, and marks an essential milestone for the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors in Ghana.

Rev. Ing. Fianko’s extensive experience of over twenty years in the electronic communications regulatory environment speaks volumes of his commitment and dedication to the industry. His roles, from starting as a National Service Person to serving in various capacities at the NCA — including Director of Engineering — have equipped him with a robust understanding of radio frequency spectrum management, telecommunication and broadcasting regulation, and policy formulation.
As the Director-General, Rev. Ing. Fianko will be instrumental in steering the regulatory framework necessary to support a vibrant broadcasting landscape in Ghana, fostering innovation and addressing the evolving challenges in the telecommunication sector. His previous involvement in significant initiatives, such as chairing the African Telecommunications Union Task Group on Rural Connectivity Spectrum Recommendations, showcases his commitment to enhancing access and quality within the industry.
GIBA’s positive experiences working with Rev Ing. Fianko over the years, particularly during recent challenging times within the broadcast industry, where he exhibited his professional and personal commitment to protecting the broadcast media, as outlined in Ghana’s Constitution from where he sits, demonstrates his strong character and principles, earning him the recognition of a credible public servant for his efforts.
GIBA holds steadfast to its mission of promoting the interests of independent broadcasters and advocating for the orderly development of the broadcasting sector. We are optimistic that Rev. Ing. Moreover, Rev. Ing. Fianko’s educational credentials, which include a first degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and a Master of Philosophy in Applied Business Leadership and Management, illustrate his preparedness to tackle the complexities of this crucial role. Additionally, his involvement as a Minister of the Methodist Church and his work within the community reflect his passion for service — a valuable trait as he leads the NCA.
