The Punch Newspaper Managing Editor, Ayisah Foster, has made a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to urgently implement the free distribution of chicks to farmers. This move, Foster believes, would significantly reduce the cost of poultry products, providing much-needed relief to consumers.
According to him, a crate of egg is now sold at Ghc65 -Ghc70 depending on the size and the live chicken is sold around Ghc120, Ghc150 and Ghc180 depending on the weight.
He said, the current economic climate, characterized by rising costs of living and scarce affordable protein sources, has made life difficult for many Ghanaians.
By providing free chicks to poultry farmers, the government can help stimulate local production, increase the supply of poultry products, and ultimately drive down prices.

Foster’s proposal has highlighted the need for innovative solutions to address the country’s economic challenges.
The benefits of such a program would be twofold: it would provide a boost to the local poultry industry, enabling farmers to increase their production capacity and improve their livelihoods, while also making poultry products more affordable for the average Ghanaian, helping to address issues of food security and nutrition.
As the government considers Foster’s proposal, many are hopeful that they will give serious consideration to this innovative solution and explore ways to support the local poultry industry.
This he said will also create jobs for the youth and reduce the alarming rate of unemployment in the Country.
