GHANA TO HOST HIGH-LEVEL FEDERATION OF AFRICAN JOURNALISTS STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING

Accra, Ghana – September 15, 2026: The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) will host a high-level Steering Committee Meeting of the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) at the Fiesta Royal Hotel in Accra from 17th to 18th September 2026, bringing together leading media and journalists’ association leaders from across Africa.

The two-day meeting being supported by KGL Group will provide a strategic platform for members of the FAJ Steering Committee to deliberate on critical issues affecting journalism on the continent, with particular focus on press freedom, journalists’ safety and welfare, professional development, media sustainability, freedom of expression, ethical journalism and the future of the African media landscape.

The meeting comes at a critical time for journalism in Africa, amid growing concerns over attacks and threats against journalists, restrictions on media freedom, digital and information disorder, economic pressures on media organisations and the rapidly changing technological environment. The Steering Committee will assess these developments and strengthen collective strategies to defend the rights, safety, and welfare of journalists and promote stronger continental solidarity and advocacy for media freedom.

The meeting will also consider and decide on the host country for the 6th FAJ Conference, with Ghana among the countries that have submitted bids to host the conference. It will further provide an opportunity for media leaders to exchange experiences and best practices, review ongoing FAJ programmes and decisions from previous engagements, and chart a forward-looking agenda for the Federation.

The opening session will be attended by key government officials, diplomatic partners, past GJA National Executives, leaders of media associations, journalists, editors, media executives and other media practitioners, alongside members of the FAJ Steering Committee from various African countries. The gathering is expected to underscore the importance of constructive engagement between governments, media institutions, and journalists’ organisations in creating an environment where journalists can work freely, safely, and professionally.
The GJA is honoured to host the FAJ Steering Committee in Ghana and considers the meeting an important opportunity to strengthen African media solidarity and collective action in defence of journalism and the public’s right to information.

FAJ President Omar Faruk Osman is already in Accra engaging key stakeholders ahead of the meeting.
The GJA believes that hosting the meeting in Accra reflects Ghana’s longstanding contribution to the advancement of press freedom, democratic governance, and professional journalism on the African continent. The Association is committed to ensuring that the engagement provides a meaningful platform for dialogue, solidarity, advocacy, and action towards building a safer, stronger, more independent, and sustainable African media.
