The Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has accused Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of refusing to take responsibility for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general election.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, 27th April 2025, Dr Boamah criticised the NPP flagbearer, alleging that he was attempting to shift blame onto others rather than accepting his role in the party’s electoral loss.
In his post, Dr Boamah asserted that Dr Bawumia played a pivotal role in the economic challenges that contributed to the NPP’s downfall.

“Elections 2024: Bawumia is blaming everything & everybody EXCEPT HIMSELF. Bawumia was critical for NPP’s economic mess!” he wrote, underscoring his belief that Dr Bawumia’s leadership failures were central to the party’s defeat.

A coalition of political parties has declared a nationwide protest for Monday, May 5, 2025, vowing to resist what they describe as a “reckless assault” on Ghana’s democracy.
This follows what they say is the unlawful suspension of the Chief Justice and the termination of several public service appointments.
In a sharply worded statement issued after an emergency meeting on Thursday, April 24, the parties warned that the soul of Ghana’s constitutional order is under siege.

“This is not about politics. This is about principle. This is a fight for Ghana,” the statement read.
The group behind the protest includes the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM).
They called on all citizens, civil society organisations, and religious groups to join what they call a non-partisan, national call to defend judicial independence.
“We will not allow political power to erode the foundations of our republic,” they declared, warning that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which currently leads government, is deliberately attempting to compromise all independent institutions.
Citing the suspension of the Chief Justice as the most egregious example, the parties claim the move is not an isolated incident but part of a broader scheme to “capture every arm of government, even the judiciary.”
They compared the current crisis to a previous failed attempt by the NDC in 2010 to remove the late Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, Ghana’s first female to hold the position.
“History is being repeated. We must not remain silent.”
According to the coalition, credible political intelligence points to a wider plot. They allege that after reconstituting the judiciary with “loyalist appointments,” there are plans to pursue constitutional interpretation at the Supreme Court, aimed at legitimising a third-term bid for former President John Mahama in the 2028 elections.
“This isn’t conjecture. This is a carefully calculated agenda,” the statement said.
The protest also seeks to highlight what they term the unlawful dismissal of public servants, describing it as a vindictive move to replace career professionals with political loyalists.
“Is this the future Mahama promised?” the statement questioned. “A regime of fear, where livelihoods are sacrificed on the altar of political vengeance?”
In a final rallying cry, the group warned of creeping tyranny and called on the so-called “silent majority” to rise.

The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana),has expressed worry about the increase of Ghanaians support for military rule, especially if the democratic elected leaders failed to deliver to expectations.
The key findings of Round 10 Afrobaromter say “by large majorities of Ghanaians support democracy and reject authoritarian alternatives .However, though rejection of military rule trumps support for it by almost 2 to 1,support for military rule has been increasing steadily since 2012,reaching 33 % in 2024.
The report explained that, fewer than half (47%) of Ghanaians say the Ghana Armed Forces should never intervene in the country’s political processes ,an 8- percentage –point decrease compared to 2022 (55 %).
Discussants of the key findings of the survey
The key findings pointed out that, solid majorities endorse the rule of law, asserting that the President must obey the courts and submit to Parliamentary oversight.
The frobarometer is Pan-African,non-partisan survey research network that provides reliable data on African experiences and evaluations of democracy ,governance, and quality of life.
With the goal to give African publics a voice in policy and decision making.
A section of participants in the event
The nine survey rounds in up to 42 countries, have been completed since 1999.Round 10 surveys were launched in January,2024.
The Afrobarometer findings by CDD-Ghana,data collection for Round 10 started 5 August and ended 22nd August,2024.
The sample size of 2,400 yielded country -level results with a margin of sampling error of +/or -2 percent with 98 % confidence level.
The survey, which was presented during a regional dissemination of Ghana Afro barometer round 10 survey findings at Silicon hotel,Kumasi on April 23, 2025, reveals that, while a majority of Ghanaians support democracy and reject authoritarian alternatives, there are concerns about the country’s democratic progress.
Madam Mavis Zupork Dome,Senior Research Analyst /National Investigator Afro barometer -Ghana survey,CDC Ghana, who shares the highlights said a large majority of Ghanaians support democracy and reject authoritarian alternatives.
The survey, also explored Ghanaians’ views on the role of the military in politics.
The findings indicate that, fewer than half (47%) of Ghanaians believe that, the Ghana Armed Forces should never intervene in the country’s political processes. This, represents an 8 percentage point decrease compared to 2022 (55%). The survey’s findings on this issue are concerning, as they suggest that some Ghanaians may be open to the idea of military intervention in politics.
However, the survey also found that satisfaction with Ghana’s democracy has declined significantly since 2017. The findings indicate that satisfaction with democracy, has dropped by 29 percentage points since 2017.
Besides,he survey found that assessments of Ghana as “a full democracy” or “a democracy with minor problems” have declined by 20 percentage points since 2017.
The survey ,also explored Ghanaians’ perceptions of governance in the country. The findings indicate that many Ghanaians believe that officials who commit crimes often go unpunished, judges and magistrates prioritize political influence over the law, and people are treated unequally under the law. These perceptions are concerning, as they suggest that Ghanaians may be losing trust in the country’s institutions.
The Afrobarometer survey provides valuable insights into Ghanaians’ views on democracy and governance. While the survey’s findings are concerning, they also highlight the need for policymakers and civil society organizations to address the challenges facing Ghana’s democracy. By working together, Ghanaians can strengthen their democratic institutions and promote good governance in the country.
The 2024 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has rejected claims that his religion and ethnicity were to blame for the party’s loss in the general election.
According to him, analysis of the data reveals that, though a Muslim candidate, he outperformed the party’s Christian parliamentary candidates even in Christian-dominated constituencies.
Addressing party supporters at the party headquarters, Dr. Bawumia explained that his analysis of the election data and results of other research suggests that the claims were nothing but propaganda.
“If you look at it, we were ten (10) contestants that went for the primaries. I was one muslim, nine Christians, but the NPP voted for the muslim presidential candidate. So that could not be the case. I decided to do some data analysis to test this hypothesis.
“The data is very clear. In many constituencies across the country, the NPP presidential candidate performed better than the Christian parliamentary candidates. So it couldn’t be if they were voting because of religion, I shouldn’t be performing better than the Christian parliamentary candidates,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bawumia has expressed satisfaction with the Prof. Mike Ocquaye’s report, explaining that aspects of the party, including the delegate system for electing leaders, will change based on the work by the review committee.
There is growing outrage and dismay within Ghana’s Council of State following what insiders are describing as a painful betrayal of loyalty, hard work, and political sacrifice — the unexpected replacement of Alhaji Said Sinare, a long-serving stalwart of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), from a key ambassadorial appointment.
Sources close to the Council have confirmed that of the 22 names submitted to the Council of State for approval on Thursday, April 17, 2025, Alhaji Said Sinare had been initially penciled in for one of the most strategic ambassadorial roles. However, to the shock of many within the corridors of power, his name was pulled at the last minute and replaced by none other than his cousin, actress Kalsoume Sinare.
The move, described by one senior source as “a slap in the face of loyalty,” has shaken confidence within the Council and stirred deep frustration, particularly among those who have long admired Alhaji Sinare’s dedication to the NDC’s cause and his unmatched efforts in mobilizing the Zongo vote across the nation.
“It is disheartening. He toured more than 4,000 Zongo communities without fanfare, pouring his own resources into the grassroots struggle for this party’s survival,” a source close to the Council stated. “To watch his name erased and traded for a relative — with no such political record — is beyond insulting and this will bring a great division into their family if care is not taken.”
The 22-name list, which also included Baba Jamal, Victor Smith, Kojo Bonsu, Hon. Larbi, Hon. Moses Asaga, and others, reportedly received intense scrutiny. Insiders say the Council pushed back and fought for Alhaji Said Sinare’s inclusion, recognizing the sheer political capital he had invested in the NDC ahead of the 2016,2020 and 2024 elections. But despite their efforts, he could not survive the storm of internal party politics and favoritism.
Reports suggest that the decision was influenced by forces outside the Council’s control, and several members have expressed worry that this act of political nepotism could demoralize core party operatives, especially those in the Zongo communities who view Alhaji Sinare as one of their strongest voices.
“There are those who work for the cameras and those who work for the people — Sinare is the latter,” another source added. “If the party continues to reward sacrifice with silence and replace loyalty with lineage, it risks tearing its base apart.”
Alhaji Sinare’s contributions to the NDC are not just historical — they are current, deliberate, and essential. From the north to the coastal belt, his presence in the field has brought credibility to the party’s outreach to the Muslim and Zongo communities. His removal is not just a personal betrayal; it is a miscalculation that may cost the party dearly, Alhaji Fuseini added.
As internal murmurs grow louder, there is mounting pressure on the NDC leadership, particularly on President John Dramani Mahama, to re-evaluate this decision before irreversible damage is done. The rank and file of the party, especially those in the Zongo constituencies, are watching closely — and many are not happy.
Ignoring the sweat and sacrifice of those who built the foundation for victory could prove politically fatal, a senior member of the party laments bitterly.
All efforts to reach out to the former Ghana Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Alhaji Said Sinare to speak on the development were unsuccessful.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), alongside the party’s national leadership, is set to commence a nationwide “Thank You Tour” starting Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the party’s Headquarters, Asylum Down.
The next tour will be on Saturday, April 26, in the Western Region.
This initiative follows the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The tour, endorsed by the NPP’s National Council, aims to express gratitude to party members and the general public for their support during the electoral process.
Operating under the theme “In All Things, Give Thanks to God” (1 Thessalonians 5:18), the tour reflects the party’s commitment to acknowledging divine guidance and fostering unity within its ranks.
Spanning all sixteen regions of Ghana, the tour will feature regional and constituency gatherings, allowing party faithful to engage directly with the leadership. Notably, the Ashanti Region will host a three-day programme from April 29 to May 1, 2025, due to its political significance.Ghanaian fashion
The tour is scheduled to conclude in the Central Region on June 4, 2025.
The NPP encouraged its members and supporters to participate actively in the tour events within their respective regions and constituencies.
In a statement issued on Monday, April 21, the National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye said, “The tour is anchored on the theme, “In All things. Give Thanks to God” (1 Thessalonians .5:18), will culminate in national interfaith thanksgiving services that include both Christian and Islamic religions, fostering a spirit of gratitude and reflection.Source: Leticia Osei

Speaking on Opemsuo Radio’s programme – Nkwantannanso – with Kofi Boakye, the mayor stated that his goal is to honour the Asantehene by working to restore the image of Kumasi as the Garden City of Ghana.
He further addressed the backlash concerning his decision to flog street traders as part of measures to clean the filth within the Central Business District of the city. He said his comment was misconstrued.

According to him, he does not intend to flog them but he will definitely evict them. He has, therefore, called for the support of all residents to enable him to work effectively.
“If I get the support of all residents, the work will be easy for me to help Kumasi regain its lost glory of being the Garden City of West Africa, so as to attract tourists and investors,” he indicated.

Miracles Aboagye, an aide to the 2024 Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has argued that the former Vice President is currently the most experienced and active politician within the NPP.
“In our party today, the most experienced politician, active politician in our party today is Dr Bawumia, no doubt about that.”
He added, “He (Dr Bawumia) is the one who has been at the forefront of this country’s politics than any other person, he is been vice president for eight years, he’s been a running mate for another eight years, that alone is sixteen years.”
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Miracles Aboagye
Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on Tuesday, Mr Aboagye confidently stated that Dr Bawumia is the right candidate to lead the NPP back to power, should he be selected as the party’s flagbearer for the next election, adding that unity is the key to returning to power.
“Our only fast route to power will be to stay united, neatly and closely together, work together behind a leader that has articulated clear-cut alternative policies to issues that matter most to the people of this country, and that person is Dr Bawumia.”
Mr Aboagye emphasised that Dr Bawumia’s extensive political experience, combined with his active role in the party, makes him the most suitable person to take the NPP to victory and argued that there is “no doubt about it, data supports it, our political history even supports that.”
He suggested that, if given the opportunity, Dr Bawumia would provide the leadership necessary for the party to regain the trust of Ghanaians and secure another term in office.
As the NPP continues to deliberate on its future direction, Mr Aboagye’s endorsement of Dr Bawumia adds to the ongoing debate surrounding leadership choices in the party.
Recently, the Deputy Communications Officer of the NPP, Ernest Owusu Bempah, claimed that over two million members of the party chose not to vote in the 2024 general elections due to what he described as the presentation of the wrong presidential candida
However, Mr Aboagye said Dr Bawumia’s take on the claim is that “Team, let’s work with the party who are committed to ensuring that we get back to power and implement all these ideas we have for all these sectors.”
In a surprising and bold statement, the Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ernest Owusu-Bempah, has called for the party to reject Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, with Kwesi Parker Wilson, Owusu-Bempah asserted that Dr. Bawumia is not “the man of the people” and lacks the grassroots appeal necessary to lead the NPP to victory.
Dr.Mahamudu Bawumia and Ernest Owusu-Bempah
“I think the time has come for us to reflect deeply on the direction of the party. Dr. Bawumia has served, no doubt, but he is not the man of the people; reject him as the party’s flagbearer for 2028.” Owusu-Bempah stated.
He further emphasized that the party needs a leader who resonates with the ordinary Ghanaian and can restore the trust of voters ahead of the 2028 general polls.
Owusu-Bempah’s comments come amid growing conversations within the NPP about restructuring and re-energizing the party following its performance in recent elections. While Dr. Bawumia was the party’s flagbearer in 2024, Owusu-Bempah believes a fresh face and stronger grassroots engagement are necessary for a successful comeback.
