The Assembly Member for the Dischemso electoral area within the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Hon. Prince Ahenkan Baako, has vowed to petition the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Minister for the Interior for a full-scale investigation into the alleged police brutality, assault, abuse of power, and unlawful detention meted out to him.

The assembly member said he has confidence that the IGP’s and Interior Minister’s offices will ensure that this matter is investigated thoroughly and that appropriate action will be taken to uphold the rule of law, protect citizens’ rights, and maintain public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.

Hon. Baako is expected to seek four (4) key redress from the probe, including 1. Order an immediate, independent, and impartial investigation into the conduct of all police officers involved.

1. Ensure that the officers responsible are identified and held accountable in accordance with the laws of Ghana.

2. Facilitate the protection of witnesses and ensure that there is no intimidation or interference with the investigation. and

3. Ensure that justice is served for both myself and my in-law.

According to the victim, personnel from the Kumasi Central Police SWAT unit allegedly assaulted him and detained him unlawfully on Thursday, 25th June, 2026, at 8:00 pm when he attempted to intervene in attacks on his in-law in his electoral area.

Narrating his ordeal to “The New Trust” newspaper on Saturday, 28th June, 2026, Baako recounted that “while attending to my business at my workplace, I heard a disturbance outside my shop.

I was informed that my in-law had been involved in an altercation with a road user. I immediately intervened to calm the situation, after which the other individual left, and I returned to my work.

A few minutes later, another group of about fifteen young men gathered outside my shop. Concerned that the situation was escalating, I called the police to request assistance.

Before the police arrived, I heard another loud commotion and rushed outside, where I found about five people violently assaulting my in-law while he lay on the ground.

I intervened to stop the assault and prevent further injury. As a result of the attack, my in-law sustained a broken leg and a serious eye injury and lost control of his bowels due to the severity of the assault.

I feared for his life.Immediately after I intervened, several individuals who identified themselves as police officers turned on me and began assaulting me.

Despite informing them that I was the Assembly Member for the Dichemso Electoral Area and asking them to exercise restraint, they repeatedly slapped, punched, and kicked me. They also struck me with their firearms on my ribs and stomach, insulted me by calling me a “foolish assembly member”, and threatened to beat me to death, saying that no one could do anything to them.

During the incident, several gunshots were fired, causing panic among residents.I was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station.

While in police custody, I was denied humane treatment. I was insulted, slapped, and punched; water was poured on me, and officers spit on me. I overheard officers saying that colleagues had called to intervene on behalf of the “foolish assembly member”, but those present ignored the appeals and continued the abuse.

I was also informed that I would be detained until the following day, regardless of anyone I contacted.

As a result of this incident, I sustained physical injuries, emotional trauma, and public humiliation. My in-law suffered life-changing injuries requiring urgent medical attention”.
