About 92 percent of newly elected constituency executives of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region are aligned with the party’s flagbearer and presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, following last weekend’s internal elections.

The results, from polls held on Saturday and Sunday, have reaffirmed Dr. Bawumia’s growing influence within the party’s traditional stronghold.

Candidates who openly backed him during the presidential primaries emerged victorious in their respective constituencies, consolidating his support base ahead of the party’s push to reclaim power in 2028.

Notably, in races where a pro-Bawumia aspirant lost, the seat was still retained within the Bawumia camp, as the winner in such cases was also a declared supporter of the former Vice President.

In several constituencies, pro-Bawumia aspirants swept 100 percent of available executive positions, with the lowest recorded share standing at 70 percent.

The remaining 8 percent of elected executives are said to have campaigned for either Kennedy Agyapong or Bryan Acheampong during the presidential primaries.

While these executives maintain that their loyalty lies with Dr. Bawumia, their previous campaign activities and track record suggest otherwise, according to party insiders.

The outcome is expected to strengthen Dr. Bawumia’s grip on the Ashanti Region’s grassroots structures as the NPP continues its internal reorganisation following its defeat in the 2024 general elections
