Women empowerment: MTN and UMB hold “Wo Nkɔsoɔ” capacity building for tailors & dressmakers

As part of the strategies of building the capacity of female entrepreneurs, among others, the leading telecommunications giant in the country, MTN Ghana, in collaboration with Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) and Kola Market, A1 Organisation, has organised a day’s training programme dubbed “Wo Nkɔsoɔ: Capacity Building for the Members of Ghana National Tailors & Dressmakers Association (GNTDA)”.

A similar capacity-building programme is expected to be held at Takoradi, Tamale, and Accra for the targeted group to help educate more people on the benefits of MTN mobile money services.

 

 

 

This year alone, 600 SMEs are expected to benefit from the empowerment programme.

Speaking to the journalists in an interview, Mr Charles Osei Owusu, Senior Manager, MobileMoney Fintech Limited, explained that it is tailored around tailors, dressmakers, hairdressers, farmers, and other groups, with the aim of empowering them with financial literacy and leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to grow or improve upon their businesses and livelihoods.According to him, MTN Ghana and its partners have carefully targeted these groups because they’re the financial backbone for the Ghanaian economy.

The capacity-building programme at the Garden House near the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, focused on topics suchcustomer relations management, space management and digitisation (A1), etc. Mr Owusu said many customers only see mobile money as a tool for money transfers, but there are more features or benefits to it than they see; hence, the need for a capacity-building programme.

“Our focus is financial inclusion. For us, it means every Ghanaian, no matter the location.”According to him, mobile money services can also be used to access loans, insurance, and pension schemes.

In an interview with Madam Edem Knight-Tay, the head of Corporate Communications for UMB, on behalf of the bank, expressed her excitement about the partnership.

She said the partnership afforded UMB the opportunity to educate the participants and introduced some of the bank’s products, such as SpeedUp products, among others, aimed at helping customers grow their businesses.“We are excited to partner with MTN Ghana on this initiative.

Our SpeedUp product is designed to support traders and artisans to scale up their operations,” Madam Knight-Tay said.In her welcome address, Madam Joana Eshun, the President of the Ghana National Tailors & Dressmakers Association (GNTDA), commended MTN Ghana and its partners for the support.

She therefore advised her members, “Let’s be proud of ourselves because at GNTDA we’re well organised. It was the maiden national mini conference of the association.Charles Osei Owusu, Senior Manager, MobileMoney Fintech LtdThis year, MTN targets supporting 600 SMEs.

The training is tailored towards dressmakers, farmers, etc.At the season dubbed “Time with the lawyer”, Esquire Jennifer Armah took the participants through the business registration process and intellectual property for tailors & dressmakers.

She advised them to register their trademark, their designs, textile designs, copyright, She proposed to the association members to promote their works through fashion shows, advertisements, etc.
