KMA boss intensifies efforts in tackling sanitation situations in Kumasi… as Oti landfill site overflows

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Chief Executive, Mr Richard Kwasi Ofori Agyemang, who’s popularly known as King Zuba, has reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to address the sanitation challenge following the overflowing of the only landfill site at Oti serving about 13 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Ashanti Region.

According to him, the site should have been closed since 2019, but due to a lack of an alternative landfill site, the site is still offloading points for 13 MMDAs’ waste, leading to it overflowing.

The mayor admits that the Oti landfill site is full to capacity, and there’s the urgent need for a different landfill site, which they’re seriously working on.

He said that even though about 13 MMDAS use the Oti landfill site, they contribute nothing to the cost of managing the site, leading to a huge debt to KMA.

“The debt owed to the management of the landfill, J. Stanley Owusu Limited, for 8 years, is about 66 million Ghana cedis, and that of Zoomlion Company is also about 165 million Ghana cedis.

Speaking to “The New Trust” on Friday, 26th June, 2026, King Zuba, as he is affectionately called, said a technical team was seriously working on an alternative site for the landfill site which was identified by one of the Kumasi Traditional Council Chiefs.

He said when the technical committee completes its feasibility study job, the chiefs and all the necessary people still will be engaged again, and when all works are done, it will be announced officially as a long-term site with the hope of getting about 6 million euros in financial support through the Ministry of Local Government.

However, in the short to medium terms, Kumasi Mayor revealed that they’re working assiduously around the clock, and “I’m sure in the next two weeks, we will see better progress or massive improvement as far as waste management is concerned.

One of the clean-ups exercise

The waste collections situation in the metropolis has improved considerably as a result of strategies adopted for the past weeks by KMA.

It would be recalled that Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi recently briefed the Kumasi Traditional Council on his measures to address the city’s mounting filth. He informed the council that the Oti Landfill site is full and revealed new strategies to combat illegal dumping and improve city cleanliness.

The Kumasi Traditional Council formally directed the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to identify a new final waste disposal site to replace the filled Oti. As part of waste management strategies, the KMA is deploying “Nsamansaman” (sanitation guards) across communities to penalise individuals for illegal dumping and enforce public health regulations. The assembly has also banned illegal waste dumping at roundabouts and within the Central Business District (CBD).

Besides, KMA introduced new technological interventions, including vacuum sweeper trucks, to clear dust and debris from major roads and public spaces. Community clean-ups.

The mayor continues to lead periodic massive clean-up exercises in collaboration with various departments, agencies, and community groups.
