Declare Mining sites as Security Zone-Dagbon Advocacy Network urges Gov’t

16th September, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DAGBON ADVOCACY NETWORK CALLS ON GOVERNMENT TO DECLARE MINING SITES AS SECURITY ZONE

The Dagbon Advocacy Network (DAN) is deeply concerned about the devastating impact of mining activities on Ghana’s water bodies, leading to severe health conditions for citizens living close to these water sources.

We urge the government to declare all mining sites as security zones to prevent further destruction.

The reckless exploitation of our natural resources has resulted in the pollution of rivers, streams, and lakes, posing a significant threat to the health and livelihoods of our people.

We commend the workers’ union for speaking out against this environmental degradation and demand that the government takes immediate action.

Regrettably, the leadership of DAN is disappointed in the presidency for failing to sanction government appointees in the mining areas, including MMDCEs and regional ministers, who have turned a blind eye to these atrocities.

Their inaction is a betrayal of the public trust and a clear indication of the government’s lack of commitment to protecting the environment and citizens’ welfare.

We make a passionate appeal to the youth and traditional rulers of the areas where mining is ongoing to think critically about their health and the near future.

We urge you not to exchange a brighter and healthy living condition for the destruction of the earth. The long-term consequences of mining activities far outweigh any short-term gains.

We implore you to consider the following:

  • Your health and wellbeing are at risk due to water pollution.
  • The future of your children and generations to come is at stake.
  • The land and natural resources are being destroyed, leaving nothing for inheritance.

We demand that the government:

  1. Declares all mining sites as security zones to prevent further environmental degradation.
  2. Holds accountable government appointees who have failed to enforce environmental regulations.
  3. Takes concrete steps to restore polluted water bodies and provide alternative sources of clean water for affected communities.

We will continue to advocate for the rights of our people and the protection of our environment. We urge all stakeholders, especially the youth and traditional rulers, to join us in this fight against environmental destruction.

Signed,
