Economic hardship:PFJ MARKET’ OPENS IN KSI THURSDAY

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture, MoFA, has extended its ‘PFJ Market’ to Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital.

The Ashanti region ‘PFJ Market’ opens at the Jubilee Park(formerly Jackson’s Park) near the Prempeh Assembly Hall on Thursday, November 24, 2022.

The Ashanti version will be an expanded market compared to the one being held at the Premises of the Ministry and also at Makola Market, all in Accra, the national capital.

According to the Regional Extension Officer, Gregory, and confirmed by the Regional Director of Agriculture, Reverend John  Manu, the Ashanti ‘PFJ Market’ will be a ‘one-stop shop’ for cassava, plantain, yam, some vegetables and fishes, a clear improvement in the Accra Market which is selling only plantain and yam to mainly civil and public servants.

The Ashanti Market is again expected yo offer its patrons the variety of farm produce at relatively much affordable prices owing to the proximity to farm gates, unlike the Accra market which comes with transportation cost.

The Kumasi PFJ Market, which is planned to open at 9.30 am Thursday, is an upscale of the Accra ‘PFJ Market’ following two weeks of piloting.

What is not yet clear is how long the Ashanti Market is to last.

The initiative by the sector Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, is in reaction to the rising food inflation being experienced across major markets in the country leading to unbearable cost of living, especially among low and muddle income earners.

However, the initiative has been criticized by sections of the public among the reasons being sustainability.
