The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has cautioned against the politicisation of elections of the Regional and National Houses of Chiefs.
The King expressed concern that the National House of Chiefs lacks the authority to install chiefs, emphasising that such power resides exclusively with traditional councils.


His remarks were made during a courtesy call by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Chieftaincy ,Culture & Religious Affairs at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, 13th May 2026.

Otumfuo warned against the politicisation of elections within the House of Chiefs, urging stakeholders to uphold the integrity of the chieftaincy institution. He called on Parliament and relevant authorities to clarify the roles of various Houses of Chiefs concerning enstoolment and recognition of chiefs.

The Asantehene also explained that he makes decisions on traditional and chieftaincy matters based on customs, traditions, and established practices of the Asante Kingdom rather than government influence.He reiterated that he does not seek to portray himself as an autocratic leader, affirming that he holds no personal grievances against anyone.
Addressing historical territorial arrangements, Otumfuo noted that Brong Ahafo was historically part of Western Ashanti. Despite constitutional changes over the years, this arrangement has remained unchanged.
He emphasised his commitment to truth and fairness in leadership and urged the parliamentary select committee to take decisive action to address challenges facing the chieftaincy institution in Ghana.
On his part, Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Chieftaincy ,Culture and Religious Affairs, Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah, who doubles as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Offinso North in the Ashanti region, said the courtesy call was to seek Otumfuo’s advice and support in tackling the increasing number of chieftaincy disputes nationwide.
He noted that Otumfuo is a key stakeholder in chieftaincy affairs not only in Ghana but also in Africa and beyond.
